I'll be the first to admit that I'm clueless when it comes to ARs; so my question to the people in the know is; what is the diff between a regular AR and a target one, other than the barrel? Or is it only the barrel that makes it perform 'better'? My limited understanding is that the rifle starts out fairly accurate; adding better triggers can be done to any AR, but what else?
I'm getting an itch and my 'target' bolt action isn't doing it for me, so I'm contemplating a change.

As I am sure you are aware, there is such a variety of things that can be done to ARs, and there are lots of decently priced options that will let you hit the ground running. Selecting an AR to be shot only prone inside of 300 will be different from something optimized for 1-500m positional fire will be different from one that is able to operate decently at 8-900m.

Generally, an 18-20 inch barrel from a decent manufacturer, and a decent trigger will make for a really nice shooting rifle, and work well in each of the categories above.

What distances were you planning, and how are you going to shoot it?

I was thinking 500+, the '+' is if I find a range long enough. Bench is what I mostly shoot now, but prone would be cool too.

A good range is definitely the trick. A 16 works well at 5, though you would want more if you are bench/prone only. A 20inch appears to stay supersonic at 9, but more might help with the wind(I didn't notice a difference between 22 and 20, but I suck in the wind). I use a "DCM" profile. There are some a bunch heavier, though I wonder about the merit.

I'd just start with a good 1:8 twist HBAR that is floated, and flat top. Odds are good it will shoot well for you. If not, it is time to chase the precision dragon, and order a krieger.

Ok...So if I understand correctly, any decent lower, good trigger, and an upper with a 18-20 heavy barrel and I'm off to the races?

And a nice piece of glass, can't shoot what you can't see... A good mount would be nice, if you're shooting prone, you could mount some bipods... Also probably some heavy loads too, don't know how the 55gr will behave at 500+

I guess, the take away here, is if you want super accurate target rifles for long ranges, you're looking at a fair investment, if you only have a 200-300 range, then you won't need to go too crazy

That is definitely where I'd start. You are porting from a bolt gun background, so you will know what you like in scopes/bipods. Check that the barrel is between 7 and 8 twist, and shoot 77gr either factory or roll your own if you do end up going past 500.

One of the guys who has written a bunch on AR accurization, Glen Zediker, refers to an AR lower as human interface with little bearing on accuracy. I am not sure that is 100% correct, but I am having good luck with a Remington R-15, and its ~1000 initial price tag.

Pretty sure you are not allowed to use one for service conditions. All you can hope for is to rest your mag on the ground and I am not sure if that is kosher either.

The first place you should start after defining the parameters of your shooting, is the caliber you want to tackle it with.
Most people make the assumption .223/5.56x45, but there are so many others: Mainstays like .243 and .308 and newer wildcats like 6.5 Grendel, 6XC, 6AR are all pushing the limits of what the little .223 is held to- even with the newer designs of bullets available.

If .223 is still your flavour, I'd start looking at 24-26" barrels with 7 and quicker twists flinging 80+ grainers.

You can rest the mag on the ground. It is actually really stable, with little of the hop associated with a harris.

i think i saw a post that one shot was bringing in the magpul bases that were designed to be used as a monopod.

Yea I saw those... I have used my mags as a mono pod and they do work really well, I use that on my carbine when prone, for my DMR I do use bipods, and they're way better.

I guess rules for SR don't allow for bipods, well... Keep them on with a QD mount and you can have best of both worlds

i really want to build a DMR upper.... one day....

for a bipod i use a vanguard with a qd mount, i got it from sail for $60 or so, has rubber feet that you can twist and you get spikes..kinda cool feature.
