Good Day,
Planning to add a conversion kit on my AR carbine, what is the pros /cons between getting just the (CCMG) 22lr bolt carrier and a complete 22lr upper?. THANKS

I'd say go with the CMMG bolt and mag...cheaper, almost as easy to swap, and in my opinion, more reliable than some of the .22 uppers I've played with. If you buy a .22 upper, do what I did with mine: buy a cheap lower from blueline, a cheap parts kit from questar, and viola, now you have dedicated .22 AR and you don't have to swap anything.

The main advantages to having a dedicated .22 upper is that you won't unnecessarily foul up your AR's gas tube and the barrel will have the proper twist rate for the lighter and shorter .22lr rounds.

I went with the CMMG stainless bolt conversion with Black Dog mags because I can run the same optics. Accuracy may not be a good as a dedicated .22lr upper but isn't an issue for me at 25yrds.
I clear out the gas tube by shooting off a couple mags of .223(after ~200rnds of .22lr) and the usual cleaning.

If you want cheap trigger time with the gun you use get the 22 conversion. You use the same optics, accessories and it has the same feel and weight. If you want tack driving accuracy get a dedicated 22 upper and target optics.

Naoh, johnTO how bad is the accuracy were talking, can I still get a 2" min. at 25 meters? for just the bolt conversion. and for the fouling issue, is it really that bad?

Accuracy depends on where the shooter points the gun. The precission you can expect at 25 yards will be somewhere in the 1-4 inches range depending on barrel twist, length and ammo. I've only shot my CMMG kit in a 1:9" twist 20" HBAR. I haven't had a chance to try my cmmg kit on my 1:7" twist 16" M203 contour barrel.

I found that practicing with 22LR just isn't the same as 223 when it comes to speed drills and shot placement for points. Not to mention, there's zero felt recoil when shooting 22LR out of a HBAR with full length stock, so you can just blast and blast and never have your POA change. The one good thing about practicing with 22LR is that it's cheaper to practice mag dump and change drills.

Fouling is pretty bad, but not much different than shooting 500 rds of 223. Remember it's a DI gun, it's meant to have a dirty chamber.
