A real .22 Black rifle:

I know DPMS used to make a .22 upper. Has anyone heard of any other companies doing this? I don't like the kits that are out there but I would love a simple upper solution. Are there any out there?

I'd love to slap that on an AR and shoot indoors with the regular guys. The looks on their faces would be priceless. Plus it would be a lot of fun.
 
surfing the us sites there are a bunch of options, spikes tactical seems to be one of the most popular

bushmaster does/did make one

who knows what we have available up here anymore though

I think the popular one is by Ceiner (spelling) ask on arf for the best results..

Do not I repeat do not buy the CZ upper for the AR15, that thing is junk on wheels, it doesn't even fit most lowers without fitting, the magazines are useless and the damn thing when it finally does decide to feed ,a rare occasion indeed, the action will not work properly.
 
I want to avoid the Ceiner kit like the plague. I'd like a dedicated upper with a true .22 barrel, rather than using one I already have. I really don't like the Ceiner kit, in case you couldn't guess :D

DPMS used to make one, but not anymore. Hmm Bushmaster. Might be an option.
 
Just wondering... what's so bad with the Cenier kit? It swaps out just as fast as an upper and is about $500 cheaper than a complete upper? Mine works like a dream.

Yeah well easy to clean a AR15 gas port...Little shot of carb cleaner down the gas tube after your done shooting 22LR, pipe cleaner and if you can, put the 223 bolt back in, fire off a round and out goes the goo...


After shooting lead ammo, I follow it by copper...Helps gets most of the crap out...
 
My main issue is the barrel. As already pointed out the .223 barrel isn't optimum for shooting .22 rimfire.
I'd also like the .22 upper to be fairly accurate.

Otherwise I'll just stick with my 10/22 target model.
 
Bushmaster does make a dedicated upper for the AR but you will have to get an importer like Questar to order and import it for you. I remember asking one of the retailers if they could order them once. The reply I got was the Canadian distributor will not bring them into Canada and/or out of the USA. :(

Haven't had any problems with the gas system to date. But then again, I shoot a lot of .223 too so it probably blows it out what I don't get out from cleaning. Haven't had any problems with my stock 1:9 twist barrel either but haven't tried .22LR's past 50m.
 
I tried to get some Accuracy Speaks AR-15 barrels (designed to interface with the Ceiner kits and be a complete barrel replacement) but they were no longer available.

So I built my own.

My first run at things was with a dummy barrel, to practice the fit and machining operations.

I now have a proper 1/16 twist barrel, no gas port, fully integrated with a Ceiner .22 kit. The kit is no longer removable, so it's a dedicated upper, that cannot change back to fire .223.

Accuracy wise, I'm getting less than 1/2" at 20 yards.

With the Ceiner kit, and a 1/12 twist old style AR barrel, I was getting 1"-ish groups.

With the Ceiner kit and 1/7 twist barrel, the accuracy was extremely....wanting. I don't recall the actual performance, just that it was poor.

Now, that said, if you have a Ceiner kit, and are willing to wait a bit until I get my lathe up and running, and the barrel blanks, I intend to make a replacement barrel for myself, using a match-grade blank, as opposed to re-using an old .22 Cooey barrel.

So, the barrel that's currently on my rifle may be making it's way to the EE before too long (next month-ish) and failing that, I have the old 1/12 twist barrel that will also make it's way to the EE.

I think Questar has tapped my phones or something. Everytime I start thinking about a product it's suddenly available. Now I just need more money :D
 
Word on the street is Questar will be bringing in the "Tactical solutions" Ar .22 uppers. I've only seen pictures from the Shotshow however they do have a fantastic reputation for .22 stuff.
