AR Buffer Tube Question...

I was of the belief that the spring and buffer was the same size on the mil spec and commercial buffer tubes. I thought the only difference was OD size of the tube with ID being the same.

I was told this wasn't true from a store I was in. DO I need a mil spec sized spring and buffer if I swap over to a mil spec tube?
 
Don't laugh, the TM for the M16 says to lightly oil the buffer tube spring, so in essence - it's buffer tube lube ;)

BUT, the only difference in springs is length depending on rifle or carbine. Buffers themselves are all the same diameter. Weight can vary.
