So I am waiting for my first ar to arrive. Got me to thinking. I am gunna have to clean the thing. I can build a stand easily enough out of wood for cleaning. Are there any special tools or brushes that I need? Do any of our sponsers just sell a kit with everything needed for ars?

I had brass rods already, tonnes of clp and patches and the requisite brushes for cleaning pistols as well as 12 guage.

Thanks!

Boresnake, toothbrush and a large bottle of Froglube, Slip 2000 or CLP.

Keep it constantly lubed, and run the boresnake through it every few hundred to a thousand rounds. Use the toothbrush when you use the boresnake to brush out the accumulated crud.

Regards.

Does your rifle/carbine come with a cleaning kit? Any standard USGI type kit with a few pipe cleaners and utility brush is more than sufficient.

I advise agianst using the segmented steel rods that screw together that come with those types of kits.. I would go with a one piece coated rod from Dewey. I suggest using a boreguide as well. This way you have less chance of damaging your barrel.

What speaks against using the cleaning kit that comes with the Swissarms rifles?

Could the steel brush damage the barrel?

I'm betting the engineers at SwissArms are smarter than that. Lots of folks abandon all logic when it comes to cleaning a barrel, and assume that barrel steel will be damaged if cleaned by anything other than the softest (most expensive) rod and brush available. I thoroughly doubt that just because the brush is made of 'steel' that it's a harder alloy than the barrel, and will cause extensive wear. I have, however had folks tell me that a 'stainless' bore brush will wear out a chrome moly pistol barrel when used to remove leading. Go figure.

kleen=bore makes acleaning kit that mirrors the usgi, but has a segmented coated rod- you also could use the special chamber brush - it's a dual- diameter- the top of it is a 223 brush, the bottom is considerably larger- this is different from your 223 barrel brush

You won't live long enough to damage the barrel of your AR with a steel cleaning rod. Run it through straight and don't give it a second thought.
If it's good enough for the military, it's good enough for you to use. You can spend volumes of cash on unnecessary accessories. Put it towards ammunition and enjoy shooting your rifle.
