I have been browsing thread for the past few hours reading up on what people had to say about their ARs. I am trying to decide whether its worth it to just go for the cheaper Norinco AR and then use the money I saved to buy all the accessories, or whether its better to wait forever to spend more on a NEA15 or something comparable.

Can anyone who has used a Norinco and another brand AR share some wisdom? Or should I just invest in a SL8 and do a G36 conversion..... too many options, so little time.

Ultimately it really comes down to how much (or how little) you want to spend; this will pretty much dictate your options.

Absolutely true. What ever you are happy with. If you are worried about having a "low quality" AR then save and spend to the level you want to so you can be happy.

If you want to get into the AR game for as little as possible (to see if you like it) buy a used Norc on EE.

I have a Norc and I like it. I've handled and shot Teir 1 ARs and I like them too. They are AR's.....what's not to like.:D

Accessories - fill your boots.....or don't. Again depends on what you want the rifle for and if the accessories will help achieve that goal.

All what accessories? There is no reason to buy all sorts of accessories unless:
-they are needed for the type of shooting you will be doing, or,
-you wish to play Mr. Dressup with the rifle.

A NEA isn't all that much more than a Norinco.
There are lots of AR options.

Or if you are thinking about a SL8, are you wanting to go non-restricted?
There are options there, but apart from a Ruger, the costs tend to be much more than a Norinco or NEA.

Both of which are valid reasons for buying accessories. It's a hobby after all. There is no reason not to buy an add-on as long as you can afford it. It might prove useless but that is OK too :)

Both tiriaq and Bolivar are correct. Depends what you want it for.
For actual shooting or a fashion statement. :)
They are only range guns in Canada, so anything goes and your life will never depend on it.

In the meantime since I do hobby gunsmithing I own a Norc. It's fun to take the low priced kid and tweak it to my specs.
I've owned 2 Colts in the past and this Norc shoots and does everything the Colts do.

Also the nice thing with ARs is that you can get a cheap Norinco, and then slowly swap out the parts.... I hear they are fairly well built and accurate.... The finish just happens to be less than stellar. Though I thought I remember reading that some parts can be slightly out of spec from time to time...

I'm not concerned about cost, that being said I dont want to spend 700$ more for the same rifle. In addition, the places I have been looking have appeared to be sold out and for quite some time. With the exception of the links uptop,, does anyone have any recommendations for sites?

1. Intended use (this also relates to restricted or non-restricted).
2. Budget. Very important. Those who say "price is no object" are usually the first to object to the price. ;)

Not this topic again. There seems to be another,"should I buy a Norinco" thread every week. The search function works.f:P:2:

Not overly familiar with the search function and decided to request info after an unsatisfying evening of browsing the forum for what I was inquiring about.

The search function is garbage IMO....but back to the thread.

In terms of an AR.....it all depends on how comforbale you are with lightening your wallet.
Pony up the cash and go for a legitimate AR platform right from the get go!

My $0.02 worth

If you want cheap buy the nea ornif you want something a step up spend a little more and get a Daniel defense or Lmt. I would rather support a cdn company than the Chinese.

+1 for intended use.
If there isn't a particular AR that's calling your name I say get a Nork, dress it up, dress it down, shoot the crap out of it. Once you know EXACTLY what it is you want out of your AR then spend what it takes to get it. You can just as easily waste money on a top teir manufactuer if you don't get what it is you want. Norks sell well on the EE so don't be concerned with being able to sell it if/when you want to upgrade.
