So I bought a Spike's Tactical BAR rail when I ordered my Stag Arms with the intent to install it when I received my rifle. Long story short the muzzle break is pinned and will require some machining. I would prefer to have the barrel cut down from 16.5" to 14.5", re-crowned and threaded. Is it legal to do this since the rifle is already classified as restricted? Would it require re-registering the length? If it is legal to have this done, by the time I paid a shop for the work, would it be just as cheap to buy a new barrel? The only other option I can see would be to drill out the pin in the break in order to install my new gas block (I am not interested in cutting down the A2 sight). Thanks and sorry for all the questions, I am still pretty new to the world of ARs.

I'm no expert but.... I did stay at a holiday inn express last night...

Short answer is no.

Actually, the long answer is no as well.

You can purchase a shorter barrel to suit your needs, but altering a barrels length to make it shorter will in turn make it prohibited...

The Criminal Code states that a prohibited firearm is:

a rifle or shotgun that has been altered to make the barrel length less than 457 mm (18 inches) where the overall firearm length is 660 mm (26 inches) or more;
It doesn't matter it starts off already shorter than 457 mm.

If the barrel is cut down from its current 16.5" length you will be creating a prohibited device in doing the cutting and you will be in possession of a prohibited device by possessing it.
It can NOT be reregistered as 1 can not reregister a restricted into the prohib class.

The law makes no sense I know but none the less is the law.

Okay, Thanks. I guess that only leaves me with the option of drilling out my break.

Just get a new barrel.

We have some 14.5" ones in stock. ;)

The problem remains though that you'll still have to get the brake off if you want to use the same gas block.

So, basically you'd need a new barrel, brake and gas block.

If your barrel is from Stag you can remove the suppressor with a screw driver.
If you can see the pin then just use a screw driver shaft thru the slots in the suppressor slots and rotate 1/8 of an inch back and forth.
This will slowly push out the pin until it can be removed with a pair of pliers.

As long as the pin is not welded in this will work.

Sorry, I guess I should mention I got it off. I just cut out around the pin with a die grinder and pulled the pin out with pliers. A bit of a PIA but if you're careful and you don't mind sacrificing the brake it works well.

Walter at Stag told me about rotating it just a bit. Mine came out without any damage to the suppressor. I then took a tap and made threads in the hole. Just use a small set screw to hold it on. Works great. Put a few 100 thru without a problem.
Also can use the crush washer to keep everything tight.

It would be a better idea to just order a 14.5 barrel.
There are a lot out there and quite inexpensive too.

It isn't. Thanks Erich.

To me, the pin is a non-issue. I think it is safe to say it is designed to be friendly to the end user. :yingyang:

A squirt of penetrant (I use PB Blaster) on the pin first is not a bad idea.

Posting this likely took me longer than the actual process.

Cheers.

PS: Please put away the grinders.

I agree that while this is not the preferred option, if it had been that easy in my particular instance, I would not have posted here. A reputable gunsmith in my area was also unable to remove this brake. I am not advocating this method for everyone but it is certainly an effective option when nothing else works.
