Can I get some input from the experts on AR uppers? I have been considering ATR's lowers, and am trying to strategies the best upper for a service rifle class performer.

I could go for used uppers of the Stag, armalite or Bushmaster ilk. having seen several hunred or thousand rounds.

Or, go with something Canadian like a Dlask.

I hear arms East may have some special parts coming in the summer, which might be worthwile, but that doesn't help me gear-up now.

I have found a 20" bbl COLT upper for $1100. Its new. (or purported to be new) No threads for a flash-hider and no bayonet lug though. Not that this is really needed in any case.

I would appreciate thoughts and comments. thanks in advance!

20 views not one comment? WTF?

LOL, you only waited one day. 20 views and no comments is better than 20 views and 25 comments by people who don't know anything about what you are asking. Wait for the folks who have an expertise to come across your thread and you'll get more useful advice.

duly noted.:p

fyi I know nothing about what your asking, but in case you haven't noticed, there is a 20" colt hbar upper in the equipment exchange right now for $675. no bolt/carrier. I don't know if this is suitable for what you want to do, but just thought I'd pass it on!

I've had great results with Colt, however I can't say the same with both the Olympic and Bushmasters I've used. Another interesting rifle I've used was a ZM LR-300. I don't know if they're available in Canada, but it was a great shooting little gun. 8 inch plates were easily dropped at 300m with the assistance of an Acog 4x32. BTW if you haven't decided on a lower either, looking at some of your numbers, you could probably purchase the whole gun in the price range of the barrel you mentioned.

First of all ATR lowers are going to be amazing.

If you are getting such a custom lower why not build a truly custom upper. Start with a barrel there are dealers on the board who can supply you 18" or 20" Krieger or Shillen barrel. Locate M4 upper receiver as the barrels will have M4 feed ramps. Wolverine carries Daniel Defense rails and gas blocks. Bolt carrier groups pop up on EE frequently.

Then put a decent optic and you are done.

My $0.02

I have that one for sale in the EE. You can check it out from my signature link. No bayonet lug but it is threaded/with flash suppressor. Like new as well for a lot less money.

Round count isn't that much of a factor with chrome lined barrels. Colt made guns are great, but some of the other makers like Stag and others are just as good. Sometimes buying a complete gun is cheaper than building one. Then all you have to do make personel changes.

If you are spending over double the amount for a Lower. Normal Stripped vs. A.T.R Stripped, why put a plain jane upper on it?
Throw on something High end. Like a LMT Piston upper.

Flame suit ON!

Save your money and spend your money (upper receiver schtuff) on a barrel/upper that will shoot into 2" at 100m. That would be all of the common brands :D... Then spend the remaining$$ you saved from not buying exotic LMT, KAC, Daniel Defense, Yankee Hill, Noveske, and other high end AR fun; that saved money will go a long way towards practice ammo AND a gym membership (I'm not joking).

That's why I put the flame suit on..... :nest:

I've had super success with 14.5", 16", and 20" barrels shooting Service Rifle matches at local, provincial and National levels. I even witnessed a well known CGNutter shoot 560 points (& upwards) with a 12" barrel and ACOG TA31 Donut of death.

It is not news that the Service Rifle Chair of the DCRA (45 Shirley Blvd, Connaught Ranges) will reiterate that a 2MOA rifle is competitive enough to win the Queen's Medal, okay, so the winning C7A1 or A2 was selected by shooting tight groups, my point is; you don't need a (most gorgeous and high drool factor) Noveske barreled, LMT upper'ed, match ammo'ed platform to win Gold medals at CFSAC/ NSCC.

I've learned this the hard way after many shooters from 1 Bde, 2 Bde, GGFG, Lorne Scots, Argyll S&H, Navy, ATESS (Air Force Trenton), 5 Bde, and other walk on units have kicked my ass (several times) on the scoreboard!! I am humbled. I have learned that, it ain't the boomstick and exotic match ammo!

I've won gold medals with my beloved Olympic Arms 20" HBAR, AND I still have to lose some weight, hence the gym membership suggestion! That... fitness... I do know will lead to high scores. Any experienced competitors of CFSAC Matches 1 to 12 will back me up on this one.

Save yer money!

Peace out... removes flame suit. ;)
