I want to buy an AR regardless, but I am going to try and get it on my Form6nia for hunting Varmints / Predators in the US.

I have a couple questions.

1) Are there any inherently poor quality brands we get up here?

2) Any best-bang-for-the-buck brands?

3) Is it worth buying a piston AR for hunting / sporting purposes?

4) Any USA / Form 6 advice? I know the SBR rules down here so it has to have at least a 16" barrel. Anything else I should know? Or can they even be put on a Form 6? Are Gov/LEO/Military marked guns not admissible?

I know little about the AR....I've never owned one, but I have been going with coworker down here with his DPMS Sweet 16 and it's damn fun. :D

I was looking at the LMT MRP from Questar. Seemed like a nice place to start a new adventure, but I want to consider lower priced options as well. I started my 1911 life with an SVI and a Nighthawk, but it was kind of painful learning the tricks and tips with such nice arms, scared to ding them up when working on them and the like....:redface:
 
What type of varmints/predators?

This will determine what type of AR. IE 16" barrel military style, or 20" bull barrel, or even an AR-10.

I'm not a fan of Olympic Arms. Bushmaster is in my so so books as well. I'm very fond of Stag rifles. I think they offer a good rifle at a reasonable price. Not cheap but not brutally expensive either. There are a lot of good brands out there. It depends on your price range and purpose.

For varmint shooting, you have a couple of options. Stag 6, Les Bauer, RRA, DPMS and a few others. Or you could build one up as well.
 
HUnting Coyotes, Racoons, etc...whatever is legal down here.

I was looking at a 20" barrel version as well.....just looks harder to find up here. Being that we cannot hunt with them on our own soil, I guess the novelty tends to lean towards the 16 and shorter. I would export one from down here, and then apply to get it on a Form 6, but thats more paperwork than i want to do..lol
 
You would be restricted to a 16" or longer barrel if bringing it into the U.S. to comply with NFA34 rules. Piston guns are cool as toys go. I put a POF P415 upper on an RRA lower a few years back in an attempt at building the perfect AR. IM not that impressed, DGI works just a well and weighs less. LWRC's stuff is impressive, and so is the price tag. You wont go wrong with a stag.
I hunt varmints with bolt guns with the exception of bunnies. They make good AR targets
 
1) Inherently poor, not as far as I'm aware. Bushmaster and DPMS do cut corners but they're priced accordingly.

2) Smith and Wesson M&P-15 seems to be a good buy. RRA and Stag are pretty good as well. Nice thing about AR15s, even if they don't have a decent warranty, getting replacement parts is a breeze.

3) IMHO the piston attachment isn't worth the benefits for civilian purposes. Even if you had any real increase in reliability, the trade off in weight, proprietary parts, and lower accuracy potential aren't worth the price. If you want a piston gun, buy a piston gun that was designed for it from the get go. The AR18, the XCR, the SCAR, the ACR, the SL8 are rifles that were designed around the piston mechanism and will serve better in that capacity.

Only buy a piston AR if you want to buy a piston AR.
 
If hunting with a AR is realy what your after the R15 & R25 is what you should be on the hunt for;

Hunting down here, range time and maybe 3 gun up north. Looking for a nice balance. I am probably going to stick with a typical black AR though, and just wrap it for grass or snow if need be, rather than go in on a full camo rifle.
 
Part of the reason why I miss the eighties. Having a delorean was cool. Going for a weekly haircut was something I had to do. And shooting varmints with my AR and CAR 15 was legal.

Times have changed as has my varmint whacking rifle selection. Guess i'll have to keep sucking it up and just use a Tavor, or FS2K. ;-)
 
I hear yah...my Tavor is my canuck rig, but i figure when in Rome right?

I've been impressed with the DPMS so far, with nothing to compare to, but no complaints.

The R25 is made by DPMS by the way and also way cheaper as us Canadians can't use it for hunting. Although you don't like the camo design right? Talk to Murdoc and for the right price he will make it look right & it will still be less than a brand new DPMS rifle. (Even though it is.)
