Forgive my inexperience with the registry technicalities...

But what are the implications of having an AR lower marked 'pistol' or 'multi-cal' or anything else?

This is just for aesthetic purposes? You can still build a rifle of any calibre from a pistol lower with no issues.. correct?

in Canada, it doesn't mean a thing. this is an American thing

what he said. to add to it, it matters in the states because a pistol doesnt require special paperwork or have barrel length restrictions, however short barreled rifles do require special paperwork. that is why most people in the usa that want a short barreled rifle buy a "pistol" varient and add a Sig arm brace on the rear buffer tube

Ignoring the fact that an AR15 is restricted regardless of anything, having a firearm registered/defined as a Pistol/Handgun means that is always and forever a Pistol and is always and forever restricted. An XCR Pistol is eternally a pistol regardless of the barrel length, even if the barrel length would otherwise make it Non-Restricted. If the AR15 were ever to be de-restricted, a pistol lower would always be considered a restricted firearm, even if mated with an upper that has a Non-Restricted length barrel.
