Being new to ARs, I have no experience of my own with regards to which mags are the best/most reliable. At a glance, I would assume that Lar 15 mags would be the most sought after as they hold 10 rounds, but it appears that pmags get people more excited. Are the lar 15 mags unreliable? Are there other 10 round mags that exist and are better? Do pmags have some advantage that I do not know of? Any other tips or insights when it comes to AR mags would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I think the only goodthing about the LAR mags are that they offer more capacity, and if the SHTF, I don't think the rivets will stand up to Mr. Black and Decker for too long, negating its advantage.

Lar15 mags

There is nothing wrong with the Lar15 mags, but some dislike them as they are hard to get out of your mag pouches/bladetech etc... without having two of them coupled together or some sort of Tac pul on the bottom.Add the cost of couplers or tacpul and you can buy P-mags or almost any brand for that matter. There is nothing special about P-mags--reasonable price, good value for magpul koolaid. Couplers are a bad idea as if you drop with one mag still charged you run a pretty good chance of damageing the lips.Buy really cheap polymer mag cut in half and fit Lar mag in to top and 2part epoxy them together,no mods to Lar mag and now you have a handle to grasp them by.

So the problem with the lar mags is mag changes not feeding issues? For now I do not intend on doing any action shooting so maybe they are a good choice for me. I will get a pmag to try it out too, but I would rather have ten round mags at the range as long as it feeds consistently.

Lar mags

I have yet to have a feeding problem with a Lar mag, already has good follower in it and same profile as GI mag--worked for 30yrs. now and they are still in use.Just about all the mags on the market today are good,as Civies we are not ever going to abuse them as they would be in combat. And to be clear not all mags are equall but if polymer is your thing Magpul,Tangodown ARC mag both good choices.

5/30 mags tend to be preferred by action shooters as most pouches are meant for these. Also, the length means they can be used as a monopod when shooting prone.

I have a couple of LAR mags though for shooting off the bench. Makes life easier than the 5/30s which stick out too far for this application.

Another vote for for 30/5 round PMAGs. They do make a very reliable monopod which is match legal in the prone position in Canadian service rifle comps.
