So I have my first AR now. I decided tonight to install my Magpul ASAP rear sling attachment point. When I removed the existing stock and plate (don't know the correct term for the little plate between the stock and lower) I found the takedown spring has no detent and is kinked badly. I could find no way to keep the spring in its slot without a detent, which I'm guessing is how the spring got mangled in the first place (by the previous owner). I also can't see what the takedown spring does. So my question is... what the heck does this takedown spring do and can I operate without it? Here's a pic I stole form the internet while searching around, just showing the takedown spring I am talking about.

This spring applies pressure to a little detent pin that holds your rear takedown pin in place...

Some of our sponsors (I'm thinking Alberta Tactical Rifle) should be able to help ya!
