So I'm a complete Noob in the world of AR's, but I'm ready to make the leap soon, at least start collecting the parts. Figured I might as well get in before the UN marking nonsense starts or the Liberals do something else crazy. I did my crash course the other day and learned what I needed to build it. Here is the list I've devised:
1. lower receiver
2. upper receiver
3. Lower receiver parts kit (minus grip and trigger?)
4. Upper receiver parts kit
5. buffer tube
6. Buffer (mid-length barrel so H2 buffer?)
7. Buffer spring
8. Barrel chambered in 5.56 & gas block/gas system
9. Hand-guard
10. Bolt carrier group
11. butt-stock (would like Daniel Defense stock and grip)
12. magazines (settled on ATRS pistol mags)
13. Trigger

Any parts that I'm missing? Assuming charging handle comes with the upper. Is there a point to replacing it?
Any suggestions on some mid-range manufacturers? The upper and lower can be made by different manufacturers?

If you're new to AR's would purchasing a complete AR now be a better option? You can purchase the add-ons/upgrades for it at anytime. At least that's my opinion.
 
If you want to do a scratch build, I would suggest starting with an Aero lower, parts kit and buffer from SGW. Then buy the rest of th parts as fast or slow as you want. The ATRS Pistol mags are my favorite! I also run a Raptor charging handle on my ARs, you can buy a knock off from True North Arms.
 
Aero is out of stock. Anyone have positive/negative thoughts on Rainer Arms for a lower/upper?
I plan on building a 7.62 in the future and probably a .308 as well. Which do you guys find has better accuracy, 7.62 or 5.56?
 
I am in the same position, and am just starting research into my own build as well. I'm going to borrow your list as a starter and go from here. I have a question that I can't find the answer too although I know it's been said a thousand times before. If i'm building an AR 15 what how do i register it or what do i register? I remember it being mentioned that only a certain part is considered the actual firearm. Can anyone fill me in on what the deal is, like when i purchased my Glock i had to wait and get all the paperwork done but how does buying parts of an AR15 work?

I apologize if my questions are unclear. I just want o make sure I purchase everything properly and legally.

Only the lower receiver is considered the firearm. You can purchase all the other parts with no problem. Once you complete the build you'll have to register the receiver with the length of barrel that you build.
 
Hey not trying to highjack the OP but i am also gathering parts to build an AR (my first). I stumbled upon the Tac Con 3MR triggers. Are they kosher here? I cant seem to find anything on them.

I have a Rainier Arms lower on one of my ARs. Its seems fine (shoots great!) but its not a "perfect" match to my Vltor upper as there is a slight amount of wiggle between the two which seems to be common in many ARs. My only other comparison is with a Noveske upper and lower which has no wiggle at all. I put in the "controversial" Accu wedge and it cleared up the wiggle completely.

Haha... good for you! I never said it mattered. I just said there was some wiggle between my Vltor upper and my Rainier lower in response to the question of they were ok. My view on the wiggle is that if I spend that much money on a rifle, I don't want it to shake rattle or make any unseemly sounds. Never having shot a Norinco or NEA AR, I can only imagine what kind of issues I would have with the fit whether it shot fine or not.
