Hi everyone

Just looking for a little clarity.

Looking at some scope options to try out with my AR. Trying to set up some budget options for my boy who is getting into shooting and wants to try out a few different things.

I am looking at buying a TRS-25 and/or a Nikon P-TACTICAL 1.5-4.5×20 .223.

Do I just attach the TRS-25 to my rail or do I need a raiser/adaptor plates etc?


Also saw a good price on the Nikon P-Series Riflescope Picatinny Mount for 1 Inch Tube on Amazon for $60. https://www.nikonsportoptics.com/en/nikon-products/mounts/p-tactical-mount-%281-inch%29.html

Again, is this all I need?
 
Look for the TRS-25 that comes with the AR riser. You will find it listed as "Bushnell AR Optics TRS-25" or something similar and the image should show a riser. You can ask around for the exact height required and try to source a riser on your own but I have a hard time imagining you saving any money this way.

Yes, you will need rings/mount for your scope if you go that route.
 
What type of AR do you own and what barrel length? If you have the M4 front sight post on yours and a short barrelled AR, you will see the post thru the scope at low mag.

Since the RDS and scope serve separate functions, it will depend on what style of shooting your son wants to do and how good their eyesight is.

If he has 20/20 vision and no astigmatism, the Bushnell can be good past 100m. Be aware that the Bushnell can washout in bright sunlight. Also, crank the intensity to as low as possibly visible for best results. And you will definitely need a riser.

Just fun shooting at the range. He may get into 3 gun as he gets older.

Also, you lost me on RDS. What does that stand for?

Red Dot Sight.

If you get a low gas block style AR, 14.5” is fine to mount a scope or RDS. The 1.5x low end of the Nikon takes a bit of getting used to if you want to use it for 3Gun for up close shots. But nothing insurmountable with practice. Guys who run 3 or 4x Elcans and ACOGs can do it. Make sure you have a good field of view at 1.5 as you usually shoot the up close targets with both eyes open and faster!
 
Front sight post is a non-issue. If the rifle comes with one instead of folding back up signt dont sweat it.

I've ran red dots, variable magnification and fixed magnification on carbine (7" handguard with front sight post) and you barely see it with magnification. Red dot is another story but it disapears after a while.

Another good option would be a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6: you get both world. A red dot with variable magnification. A bit pricier but you get the vortex warranty and an overall good optic that works very well 0m to 400m (or more). I've seen it used at 3guns match a lot.

I was just about to suggest this.

If OP has a 14.5" barrel and wants to engage targets at +100m, but possibly closer, an LPVO with actual 1x is awesome. I'd just suggest getting an oversized zoom lever if you do, makes it easier to adjust.
 
Dante Sports had the TRS-25 for $89 not too long ago. I bought one a week or so back. A riser costs about $16 for a UTG or less for generic on Amazon. Cheaper than the TRS25/riser package.
