AR optics?

So I just purchased a Colt AR 1516 Sporting Rifle to use primarily in 3 gun matches. So let's say the max range will be 200 yards. What would be reasonable optics to put on it? Not really looking to spend more than a few hundred on it.

What would you recommend? Iam very new to this 3 gun game. Thanks for any input.
 
Nothing too much in your price range. In the optics game, you truly get what you pay for. Your optics should be at least 50% the cost of your rifle. Some people say it should be the same price as the gun.
In your range, the Bushnell AR1-4x is ok. For a RDS, the Bushnell TRS-25 seems to be quite popular. I had one but sold it. Compared to my Aimpoint Micro T-1, it was meh! You get a lot of wash out of the dot with the cheaper optics. Holosun is another value brand but the reviews are iffy.
In all honesty, if your optics doesn't say Made in USA or Made in Germany/Austria/Czech, I wouldn't buy it. Remember, buy quality, cry once!
 
I run an EoTech on my primary, though I've recently tried (and like) the aforementioned Bushnell AR 1-4x. That said, it cost almost $500 by the time I bought QD rings. I also have a 1st gen SPARC on one rifle, and a Holosun 403G on my shotgun.

Cheapest I'd go would be the SPARC. Current gen 2 is $250+ or so. Solid little optic. The Holosun has done me fine for a few dollars less, but many negative reviews exist.

The TRS25 is ok, but I too sold mine after finding it washes out on bright days.
 
3gun isn't a cheap game, but doesn't necessarily have to be to have fun. For a few hundred dollars, have you considered just running irons? The long shots won't be easy, but they are perfectly fine for the rest.

Otherwise, EOtechs are nice because of the reticle. I know there is the Eotech/Aimpoint arguements, but I love the 1MOA dot with 65MOA circle. VERY fast and awesome for longer range shots.

Can't speak for scopes much. I run a Vortex PST 1-4. For the used price it's a pretty banging scope. The Eotech I used to use was great too. In some ways I liked it better.
 
+1 on buy once cry once.
Without good sights your AR is useless.
Especially in a competition.
Save up and buy exactly what you want. In the long run it WILL be cheaper than buying 2/3/4+ optics trying to find gold amoung cheap crap.
 
Thanks for the good information so far guys. I am leaning towards the Vortex or Bushell. Also thinking 1-4x. Since I have really no experience with 3 gun. Would you go with a dot over cross hairs? My concern with the dot would be longer range targets. The dot will likely cover them.

For some background I shoot Standard Division in IPSC and don't see that changing any time soon. Thanks again.

Also depends on the stages you shoot. If you are closer to 50yds and in more frequently, then a dot makes sense. If there are a lot of long range stages, then the cross hair works. Doesn't the Bushnell AR have a dot and a cross hair?
I've shot stages out to 100yds with a 10.5" and only a 2MOA T-1 with no magnification. Won't say it's perfect but I still hit the gongs quite reliably.
 
So I ended up with a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x24 optic. Hopefully this will be a good choice?

It says I can co witness with irons when/if I decide to go tha route.

Whadya think?

What would be the point of cowitnessing a scope?

In any event, that optic will do you just fine
 
I do not shoot in 3 gun but I was in several 3 gun forums and the competitors recommended the Weaver scope below for someone starting in 3 gun competition. I put it on my AR 15 carbine and love it for the price and clear optics.
