i just got my first AR about 4 months ago, just a DA, nothing fancy but I really enjoy it so far, and have had my wife out shooting it a few times . She enjoyed it also, and we have talked about getting her one, but she doesn't seem to enjoy it as much as I do, however she absolutely loves shooting her 9mm handgun, it is by far her favourite gun.
I happened to show her a vid on the JR Carbine in 9mm, of course the one we saw was the Muddy Girl camo model, and she is really digging the look of it. She is ok with the recoil of the AR, but I'm thinking she would probably enjoy the lesser recoil of the JR more, which in turn would make her happier in the long run, I obviously want her to love her carbine as much as she loves her handgun.
I could pick up a used Norc or DA for her in the $600 range, the JR is around $1000, and of course I walked into our local gunshop yesterday and there on the wall is a JR Carbine in Muddy Girl camo!
So here is the dilemma,,,, is the extra $400 worth it for the JR, factoring in the fact that I honestly think she might enjoy the JR more? I'm sure that if an AR showed up she would enjoy that, but I'm not sure she would LOVE it?
She would not be shooting any competition with it, just range fun, but she also wants something that she can shoot accurately to at least 100 yards.
Any JR owners care to give me their impressions of the rifle, it's accuracy, how you like the recoil compared to 5.56, etc, anything that will help me decide which way to go on this would be appreciated

Jr is pretty heavy, best to have her lift and aim one first
A light short 9mm AR would be a better choice
If the paint is what is selling it well get the jr

Owned a 9mm JRC but ultimately sold it quite quickly. Obvious low/no recoil was nice. Used it to shoot some rabbits and was fun to carry away from the range but it is, after all, a pistol caliber carbine. Not a flat shooter so it wasn't fun to shoot at varying ranges as it would be drastically different. But... Was it fun. Yes. Opinion time. I still have an AR and I have no JRC. If she don't mind the extra noise and recoil... AR with a paint job?

Don't be fooled my wife will shoot my 5.56 all day long and hates my 9mm TNW because of the reciprocating bolt and perceived (never use that word with a female ever) recoil.

I found that the JR is a Dirty Gun. It needed to be cleaned way more often than the AR. Plus its a blow back & my shooting glasses were always getting a lot of crap on the lenses. After a lot of shooting , you could feel it on your face and even your hair. It seemed that the gun wanted to run "wet" to work properly....so, it ended up on you LOL.
She didn't like it and neither did I. She did LOVE the beretta cx4 storm NR. fantastic gun !! the JR was picky on ammo and had some FTE , but the CX ran flawlessly & ate anything you feed it. More accurate too.

Tough call Edgy!
I'm a believer that anything that looks like a rifle should shoot a rifle cartridge ( even a small rifle cartridge!) but if the lovely lady would enjoy a 9mm more, then get it.
Better she have a more expensive gun that she will shoot than a cheaper one that sits in the closet!

The good thing is the NR status and ammo compatibility with her handgun. The bad thing is you need to sell more popcorn!

In my experience with showing girls all things guns - girlfriends, sisters, range newbs, etc. - they'll take to a certain gun. And that's that. I tried one with a JR a few years back and she thought it was just ok. Same girl shot a few bench guns that same month and was hooked. Went on to kick all of our butts at the local friendly matches. Others I've worked with love my Tavor, a couple even dig my done-up m305. In the end it's all about what they feel like shooting, and for the most part they couldn't care less about the mechanics. "Just show me how and one day I'll be better at it than you" is my personal experience. I say sit her down with a bunch of different stuff at the range before choosing her next piece for her if possible.

Yeah SA, I'm with you on the rifle cartridge thing, lol, since I'm sure it would be easy to find some " muddy girl" parts to install on an AR for the same look, plus the versatility of the AR for longer range shooting is hard to pass up, I mean what if she decides she likes the challenge of longer range shooting, then the JR is out of its element.
Either way, it's going to cost me money, lol, better get back to making the popcorn :)

That is good advice, maybe I will take her to a rental range and let her try some pistol caliber carbines first

My wife is "meh" on her muddy girl JRC. She mentions the perceived kick.
And it does kind of blowback in your face.
But she loves her Savage MK2 with the pretty wood stock.

The JRC is attractive cuz of it's NR status, and if she shoots a glock, you can use 1 type of mag. If you're not looking to hump it around in the woods, it's a major compromise for range duty. I've let women shoot my 7.5" AR and they love the weight and handling. JRC is probably something she'd grow out of, whereas an AR would be less likely IMHO. My JRC hasn't seen actual use in over 2 years.

One other thing is that if she ends up not liking the AR, you would have 2!

I have a JR in .40 S&W. I'm impressed with the accuracy; I can ping a 4" plate all day at 100 with a cheap-o Tasco scope on it (With factory ammo, Remington UMC seems to shoot well). The recoil is very tame... I haven't shot the .45 ACP version, but I would think that is the amount of recoil that comes off of a JR bothers you, you should just stick to .22lr. It doesn't kick any more than my Benelli MR1 in .223/5.56.

As others have said, it does seem to get dirty fairly quickly (Within a couple hundred rounds), and then it starts with the FTF/FTE problems. It's relatively simple to disassemble and clean, but does require the stock wrench, and a single hex key to get the bolt handle off.

The only reason I would bother with one would be for non-range plinking (I do a lot of crown land shooting) though. If you're only going to an approved range, I can't see a benefit to a JR over an AR.

Mine loves her TNW. JR was too heavy. My 11 and 13 year old girls do not perceive any recoil on it. That said, the AR is good from 0-300 yards, no issue. Can't say the same for .40 or 9.

Personal choice, and always consider accessories like mags and types of ammo required. Less calibres can be better, and adds some redundancy.

If you get her a JR, she will look over and envy how easy it is to take down your AR compared to her rifle.
