When I installed a new stock ring on my AR I had to remove the rear stock tube. Since then the takedown pin will not stay in place ( a true pita ). I didn't notice a piece(s) fly away but that doesn't mean one didn't...

Is this a common problem. What piece(s) would I need to replace to return my takedown pin to working order. Thanks!

It's been awhile since I had an AR but I do seem to recall that there was some sort of spring loaded part that held the pin in place. Can't remember if it was a ball bearing or plunger with a small coil spring providing the pressure.

Wish I could be of more help but like I said it's been awhile since I had an AR apart.

The rear takedown pin is held in check by a rear detent pin that feeds from the back of the lower receiver towards the hole that the takedown pin runs through. There is a spring that pushes this detent forward against the takedown pin...this spring presses against the stock(or buffer tube)

Since you have already taken the stock off once then it can't hurt to take it off again and look to see if the spring and detent are in place.

If you removed your old stock and replaced it with a new there is a small spring that will pop out from the right rear side inline with the takedown pin.
What you will need if this is missing is a "Takedown Detent Spring".
Its a very fine long spring, and you can see the hole it goes into if you remove your rear stock again.
Make sure that you didnt also lose the pin that feeds into the hole first before the spring which is called "Takedown Pin Detent"

Best way to solve the problem of missing springs and detents is to get push button take down and hinge pins, that is if you can find them in Canada;)

Just got a new stripped lower and that was the only problem I couldn't figure out.So thats where the spring and pin go. Thanks guys....Bob

Would an Accuwedge solve this problem of no detent spring/pin?

I've seen the 'JR rear tensioning pin" but don't want to be in a situation where I require an allen key to break down for cleaning. Too much of a pita.

I have also noticed a front reciever pin with a ball detent but I haven't found one for the rear takedown though. Any idea if these rear ball takedown pins exist?

There's a spring and a plunger (detent pin). I'm guessing you're missing it.

SsssssPpppppppppRrrrrrrrrOooooooooooIiiiiiiiiiiNnnnnnnnnnGggggggggg!

Hopfully your gun room/workshop doesn't have shag carpeting...

If you can find the spring, an improvised detent can be made with a piece of wire coat hanger.

Very true. I lost my detent pin a couple of days ago (carpet underneath the desk that I work on), but still had the spring. A little bit of back-and-forth between the lower reciever for trial fitting and the dremel for shaping of the end that engages the takedown pin, and all of a sudden I had a perfectly workable replacement. It's probably not Milspec, but it certainly works.
