My next rifle is going to be an AR and Iam hearing alot lately about AR Lowers and Uppers and I see lots of dealers are selling them. My question is, why would you want to buy just an Ar lower besides getting one before any semiauto ban came into effect, can you slowly buy all the parts and build your own rifle or what?

BUy an LMT from Questar. Keep in mind that uppers arent regulated only the lower which is the registered part. The lower is the "gun". The upper is just what sits on it.

I believe it is cheaper to buy the parts and put it together your self. I'm sure one of the AR guru's here can break it down for you.

Instead of buying a complete rifle then stripping of and replacing parts for 'custom' ones you can look for deals on components and build what you want the first time for less money.

Yes, that is exactly what I am in the process of doing... it's nearly complete... the sight is arriving today in the mail :)

I built it from scratch, Every part. The only complete thing I got was the Upper and that is it. I even bought the bolt carrier group seperate.

It's very fun! It's like Lego for men ;)

Further on the subject of building your own. I am thinking of building my own and was wondering if any of you fellows have used the 80% kits from KT Ordnance. This is the Franken-Stone 15-B kit:

There are 2 other kits, both billets. Just wondering about the finished product. Looks like fun to build and since I have the necessary tools thought I might give it a go.

How much fitting is required to make one work? Are they really drop in when building a lower? I am thinking of building th elower from parts and eventually gteting a LH upper....I can handle some minor fitting but don' want to screw it up.

Cheers

Everything is drop in... it does take some finess to get some of the roll pins in. If you are good with your hands it's no problem. If you are all thumbs... then I'd suggest a completed lower. But there is no fitting or modifying of parts to make them fit - the AR15 is great for that.

Tools required: Hammer, brass punch set and dexterity :D... seriously that is it (Oh, and flat head screw driver for the grip screw).

The other components are even easier (you might need a special tool for the stock depending on the stock you buy - or borrow one, many people have them).

I have assembled 1 1/2 of these from parts - a lower with 2 different upper assemblies. IF you are patient, and watch for good buys, you can assemble one in a cost effective manner.

Not really, I built my first AR15 awile ago and it cost me 1500 more then if I went out and just bought a SNAG AR15, becuase I went with all the HSLD gear for it.

The second one I built came just under 2K and that was a Colt 9mm one.

I know the lower receiver on an AR is the restricted part, but does the CFC view a stripped lower any differently than a complete rifle? I thought you had to inform or re-register the stripped lower once it became a complete rifle.

I too am thinking of picking up a stripped lower in the event such a ban comes into place, but I'm wondering if they would somehow view it differently than a complete rifle.

The CFC doesn't view the restricted lower any differently (it still takes a few days to buy one).
Technically you're supposed to get it re-registered within 30 days, but since it remains a restricted part regardless of it's configuration most people don't. I remove my upper every 29 days then put it on again ;)

It'd be different if you had a Non-Restricted / Prohibited combination - you'd want the paperwork to be absolutely correct in that scenario.
