saw this on another forum,and since i've seen this asked i'll post it for anyone doing a search

A (splintered) = Anchor Harvey Aluminum
AF = Alcoa Forge
C AF = Colt Alco Forge
C MB = Colt / Mueller Brass
Cardinal (stylized) = Cardinal Forge
CH = Colt Harvey Aluminum
Circle/Crosshairs w/"AR" = ArmaLite
CK = Colt / Kaiser Aluminum
CM = Colt / Martin Marietta
D (stylized) = Diemaco
DK = Diemaco / Kaiser Aluminum
E = Emco
EK = EMCO/Kaiser
E MB = EMCO/Mueller Brass
F keyhole = FNMI / Cerro Forge
FA = FNMI / Anchor Harvey
FK = FNMI / Kaiser Aluminum
FM = FN/Martin Marietta
FMB = FNMI / Mueller Brass
Keyhole = Cerro Forge
L = Lewis Machine & Tool

My upper has a couple: A keyhole on the side, an M on the front portion facing the handguard, and if you remove the upper you will see an L on the rear portion facing the buffer.
 
This is the forge mark, not necessarily the actual manufacturers mark, just FYI.

Cardinal, Cerro, Anchor Harvey and Alcoa are the most common forge marks seen these days. Probably Cerro most.

Knowing the forge doesn't tell you who machined it.

Please don't.

I dislike stickies. They take up a lot of valuable real estate on page one, and once there are more than four or five, nobody looks at them anymore. I recognize that stickies have a place for essential information like forum rules, and truly groundbreaking posts like Ekie's work on historical models over at AR15.com, but that's about it.

The information on forge codes is neither especially hard to find or particularly useful, as dangertree pointed out. Keep the glue in the drawer.
