I am posting this in 2 sectiosn so I get an answer from both sides. I can get a decent M1 carbine to do a custom build on or a Norinco "AR" wanna be from frontier. Give me your opinions on which would be a better choice. The Norince out of the box looks awesome and may need some polishing here and there but the M1 is old, used, but cheaper to build ground up. I can use the M1 to hunt legally if I felt inclined where are the 5.56/223 isn't legal here for anything other than varmit, not that it is a big deal to me right now. GIve me your biased opinions but please be thorough and explain. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!:yingyang:

Most M1 carbines are restricted due to barrel length, so hunting would be out of the question. If they are both going to be restricted, I would go with the AR for availability of ammo , parts, etc.....

Build an old used M1 into what? Custom? An old used M1 with a plastic stock?
An M1 used to be a great plinking rifle, maybe shoot a slow rabbit. Not what I would call a hunting round. And the .30 carbine ammo is expensive.

An AR is an AR. There is no AR wanna-be. Anything that is not Knights or Armalite is basically an AR wanna-be then.

Buy a mini-14.

First up, AR aren't allowed for hunting being a restricted gun so you will be only able to shoot it at the range. And as far as hunting deer or bigger games it is my opinion not very ethical to do so with a .30 Carbine.

Oh good points that I missed. So the Norinco on frontier is a restricted then?? I ask since it doesn't say on the site. Ya the M1 would be a no go for anything but the range then....hmmmmmmm May have to opt for a mini 14 then..... decisions decisions.......

Did you look at the Norinco M305? Affordable, non-restricted, big game hunting caliber and the clone of a popular Designated Marksman Rifle(and the inspiration of the "MINI"-14). Take a look at the "Main Battle Rifle" section.

Good luck in your researches.

I am interested in the 305 but try to find one now... I am looking to get out shooting and would liek to get this decision and a gun shipped out soon. I am gonna do some more research on the 305 since the other 2 are restricted.

Get a Norinco M14S 7.62 NATO non-restricted heavy-hitter...anything else would be uncivilized :)

+1 good advise. I have M1 Carbine and it is not a good platform to build custom anything out of it. Will take some tweaking to make it shoot accurately. Most likely will need to be re-barelled at astronomic price to make non-restricted.

AR15/M4 -ish rifles are restricted by definition. For now it is beyond our dreams to get them legal for hunting.

M14s wins hands down. Cost effective, lots of custom parts, inexpensive and accurate rifle. Great 308 cartridge, good for everything except elefants. I have two myself

Yup looks like the M14 is my only option for my needs. I think an AR is more of a want then a need.....not that theres anything wrong with that. What did that stock upgrade cost you?? That is the look I want in a rifle but need a useable caliber which makes it my only option other than a tactical stock on an SKS. I don't want to bastardize my russian SKS so I would have to buy another (chinese) and do it up if I could find a collapsable stock, which seem to be impossible to find now.

Drewz, shopping carefully one can put together nice rig for 1600-1700$. Of course shoe-string budget automatically means shineese or low-end optics if you don't mind.

Well I just paid for a m14 from B.C. and am making a deal for a chinese SKS right now that I plan to restock, get a little gunsmithing done to and get a small optic since it will still be no hell over 150 yards. Oh and would like to run a removeable 5/20 but I have heard they fit terrible, from what I have read on this forum.

Nice lookin!!!!!!!!! I am a bit nervous now with the hub bub about the m14 being classed as a prohib today. I have not heard from the seller yet about the transfer today either so I am hoping for the best since it is paid for. It has the USGI synthetic stock with adjustable cheek piece. Cross your fingers for me that it went through registration so I can get my hands on it and try her out next week.
