My wife just got her RPAL, I'm pretty happy about that, now we can both enjoy the sport. Anyway, I want to get an AR for her to shoot. She has a fairly small frame and a standard length rifle, 18.5in, is ok but she gets wobbly with it after a while. I was thinking of getting a 7.5-10.5 length upper; how would a sbr effect recoil and how short should I go? I want her to be comfortable when shooting.

When you're talking about weight being an issue with the AR, a few inches of the barrel don't make much of a difference when you compare that 85% of the weight is in the receiver, stock and magazine which is already very close to the body regardless of what length the barrel is.

It sounds rude and I in no way intend to be but pushups will make it easier to keep that thing pointed steadily down range.

The difference between a 10" barrel and a full 20" barrel is about 1 lb. Compared to an average of 7 lbs for an average carbine style AR15 you can see that barrel length won't make all that much of a difference. Not nearly as much as doing a couple core exercises and push ups ;)

There are different types of barrels, some heavier than others, not totally based on the length. The NEA 10.5" barrel I have is quite heavy. I've felt AR's > 14" that feel lighter at the front end.

Not that much more felt recoil on the shorter barrels IMO. Mostly more noise and bigger muzzle flash.

Gee thanks...I'll be sure and pass along your exercise suggestions to her......not!!...:)
I was asking more from a size perspective rather than weight....will the length improve ergonomics for her?

Shorter guns swing much easier and faster than longer ones. The weight difference is minimal, the torque is not. Long guns are taxing on the body to hold up. Look for a light weight or "pencil barrel" contour and something in the 12.5" range would be almost perfect. Ergonomics won't change with length, endurance while in use will.

lol Yeah maybe that might not be a good idea eh?

"Alright honey, now that you have a loaded AR15, would it fackin' kill you to work out once in a while!?" :D

In all honesty though, that would help. Or you could cut a quarter pound off the barrel and expect it to make some kind of a difference or something, I don't know I'm not into tactical stuff lol

My fun choice ar is my 10.5 no doubts.

Add a linear muzzle device to direct the blast up front and it is a very fun carbine to shoot and heh... Plenty of power to make hole on paper up to 200 meters+..... lol
