umm good, thinking of making some shortys, so looks like 13-14.5 is not a problem
what profile? what gas block size, carbine or mid
thinking of running a mid profile and dimple finished much like my KAC.

In 7.62N you get the best stabilization by 16" and you'll get no more improvement in accuracy. After that you're just getting more velocity and thus better range out of the rifle. In my experience a 16"bbl DMR can reach out to 500m and perform very well. To the point where people can make a first shot hit on a practice golf-ball after just 16h of instruction. Once you get into the shorter bbls you will see the MOAs open up.

Having said that, it really does depend upon what you're after as far as the role of the rifle...

Under 18'' in .308 is a useless waste of powder and velocity in my opinion, unless you like fireballs , if you want a shorter barrel than 18' your better off with a intermediate caliber .. In my opinion the best preforming rifle rounds in short barrels 16'' and under are the lower velocity rounds like .300blk and 7.62x39 .. 18'' or over barrels the HV calibers like 6.5 CM, .308 or .223 are the way to go.

best performing in what area? waste of powder in what? Velocity loss is expected in shorter barrel, so your point is?

there isn't a happy medium where everyone can unanimously agree on, rather collect info and see which platform is more common thus making a barrel for that platform. BBB you have to remember AR 10 and everything else are restricted, shooting at paper and probably out to a maximum 500m in range. Any 223 can do 500m as well, so some owners may just prefer to save weight and get a shorter barrel

AR10 = armalite its on its own. DPMS/KAC (AR308/SR25) and a whole whack of other manufacture uses this platform. Larue again its on their own.

A boat load of manufacturers from LMT to HK down to Colt and PWS make 12.5/13.5" 7.62NATO carbine. They are special weapons that seem to fill a niche for some particular needs. Don't know what it is but I doubt they sell them as 500m weapon systems.

On the other hand, the NATO world is full of 5.56 and 7.62. If you want something bigger than 5.56, 7.62 is the only other choice based on logistic reason.
