AR15 buffer weights

Differing buffer weights are used to control rate of fire in full autos. In semi autos heavier buffers can reduce carrier bounce and make the action smoother and quiter. I replaced my standard weight buffer with a Spikes H2. It does not rattle and recoil was modestly reduced.

In a 16" barrel AR15, I haven't found much difference between using the H, H2 and 9mm buffers. Go with the cheapest. That said, my 10.5 upper also works just fine with a H2 buffer, though most people will suggest that you should use a 9mm buffer for the shorter guns. My 20" AR15 only uses a stock rifle length buffer and I haven't had any reason to dink around with the stock buffer. YMMV. Here's a chart for your interest.

In addition to different weights you need to take into account the weight material. Standard buffers have solid discs for weights. The spikes st t2 is filled with powdered tungsten which makes for a smoother recoil impulse. The powder moves like a wave instead of a single mass. I run t2 in both my mid length rifles and they are much softer shooting.

I HAD to change my buffer weight on my 14".
Was getting lots of failure to extracts. I guess the BDC was moving to fast not allowing pressure in the chamber to die off and would loose its grip on the empty case and cause a double feed.

Changed buffer weight..... problem has been fixed.
