Could someone recommend a flash suppressor that looks basically like this but perhaps a bit cheaper?

For an AR15.

Great advice thanks a lot guys.

Could someone tell me the difference between a Noveske KX3 and KX5? Is it important to have a crush washer and what does indexing mean?

kx5 is 6.8 and 7.62... 3 is 5.56 , without a crush washer ,mine kept coming loose. I now have a crush washer and it stays on. Blue locktite works also.

Kx5 is available in 556, it's slimmer to fit under hand guards for shorter barrels. The finish is different.....shiner.

Some muzzle devices come with crush washers, some do not. PWS and Silencerco (the 2 I have experience with) and many others come with shims instead of crush washers. They are 2 different ways of doing the same thing, namely, to keep the muzzle device properly indexed to the barrel. Indexing is nothing more proper positioning of the muzzle device so that the cut outs/ports/baffles are in the right position to do what they were designed to do. Often times, for ex, the manufacturer's logo will need to be at the top dead center/12 o'clock position in order for you to know your device is properly aligned (re: indexed) to the barrel. You "crush" the crush washer as you're torqueing the devince onto the barrel and friction will keep it from backing out. Same thing with shims, but they come in pre-set thicknesses and you add/remove them to the barrel to get the device to within 1/4 turn of Top Dead Center, then torque it the rest of the way.

IIRC, shims are said to be superior to crush washers

Also, blue locktite is neutralized by heat, so putting it on the threads of a muzzle device may be useless.

Get the retro 3 prong flashhider
It's the most effective according to a YouTube review and looks the bet.
Hi cal has them for $34.99

Posts like these are what make CGN great.

Flash Hider doesn't do the same thing. What a flash hider does, is exactly what its said to do - "Hide the flash" and not be blinded during night fire.

The KX3 and the slimmer KX5 redirect muzzle blast and gas forward (reducing the concussive force) rather than to the sides or towards the shooter. It will not hide flash at all - in fact for most short barreled AR it gives off a massive fireball (hence the "flaming pig").

Oh so it's like that "Loudner" that homer Simpson bought?
What's the point of this device anyway?
I see lots of pics of them on short barreled AR's

This > "The KX3 and the slimmer KX5 redirect muzzle blast and gas forward (reducing the concussive force) rather than to the sides or towards the shooter."

If you've ever stood next to one of these "Flaming Moe's", ooops, I mean "pigs" being operated on a range you'll know what ctcs is talking about. In short, unpleasant. The "Loudner" analogy is incorrect, there is no way to make these short barrelled rifles quiet here in Canada unless one serves in LE or the CAF.

isn't the noveske a comp with all the ports going out the tip? Nothing to align there , is there? I understand the diff be tween a comp and a flash hider and I thought op was referring to a comp. my S&J linear comp has all the port holes on the tip all going forward. Be fore I got the crush washer I used blue locktite , didn't have any trouble. I do know that the linear comp is much quieter that the flas hider I had. The flash hider made my ears ring for 20 mins , when I accidentally forgot my muffs. I can shoot , no prob , without muffs, with the linear comp.

The KX-3 is a compensator. It "compensates" for the felt recoil experienced as a result of the firing cycle and redirects the hot gases forward, away from the shooter.

Nope no ports - its basically a "cone" - which redirects the blast forward.

I can't speak for the S&J linear comp, but the performance compared to other linear comps is similar (redirecting force forward) - with the KX3 being slightly more "stable" against muzzle jump/recoil.
