its been a while since i had my AR out to the range and before now id always had a scope on it.

so i wanted to zero my irons at 50m. to get the rifle zeroed at this range i had to raise the front sight post quite high, much higher than i had expected. its up so high you can literally see underneath it.
im using the smaller of the two aperture. shooting a 55g bullet out a 16.5 inch barrel. A2 rear sight, set to the 6/3 setting intended for zeroing.

Im wonder if this is the normal height for a 50m zero or is something weird gong on? Perhaps I need to adjust the rear sight?

here are some pics:

Any input is much appreciated :D

That does NOT look like a standard AR15 front sight post to me...?? It should be square in cross-section, for starters. Next, I'd try it at 100m, not 50m.

It doesn't look standard to me either. I had a similar front post on a 20" barrel. I would zero it at 200 m and 50 accordingly( which is for civilians) We never shot at 50 in the military unless it was a jungle lane or other live fire. What is your rear sight?
I like the micro front sight and used to put most servicemen to shame past 300m. I'm drunk and I'm not prove reading me post. It's all up to #### just bring to the range with me on the weekend.

i think my front sight post is smaller diameter than regular ones. it's designed to go on carbine length rifles to correct the sight radius issue

The `F` front sight base was made specifically because of this. It sounds like you have a detachable carry handle, since you described the lowest setting as 6/3, and those often require a taller front sight. It is not practical to switch to the taller sight base, so you will need to look for a taller post.

The small aperture is for 300 meters.. zero your rifle with the small aperture at 25 meters it should be dead on at 300 make sure your rear sight is at 6/3,, the large aperture is for 0-200 meters ... it should be dead on too

I've tried to zero with the small aperture, but I have trouble focusing with it.
