Having an issue with the NEA hand guard I just bought. When I time the barrel nut to allow the gas tube to enter the upper receiver it cants the hand guard to the left or right and won't align properly. This is my first build so i'm not sure if I am doing something wrong or if i got a defective item on my hands. I have included a pic to show you what I mean, one of the grooves on the barrel nut is directly blocking the gas tube when the handguard is put on straight.

Any and all help is appreciated

thanks for your time,

Ben

You need to shim the barrel nut.

Lots of good videos on the net to explain how...also, this helps...

From what I've read that won't solve my problem, the nut lines up properly with the receiver when torqued. The issue is the way the hand guard fits onto the barrel nut, it's offset to the left or right when the nut is aligned properly with the gas tube. I think i may have got a lemon

I wouldnt be so quick to assume its a lemon without scouring youtube and google lol. I agree with the above poster, sounds like you need a shim. But not every piece will fit on every ar 15 hate to say, ive had a couple issues where handguards simply would not fit on certain guns. Annoying, but when you think about how many different AR makers their are and how many millions of different pieces there are gunna be some discrepancy at some small points. Even same brands. Older NEA's ive found a bit more discrepancy than average, but they fixed that. So that would be a lemon in that case, even so some lemons are only lemons with certain guns. Welcome the world of the ar 15 lol

Apologies, after a bunch of research and taking off the handguard of my other rifle i discovered you were correct, i need a shim, more for the spacer aspect but a shim nontheless. Thank you for your help.

No apology required...I just came back to see if you had sorted it and it seems you have...I didn't even get a chance to be offended...Glad it worked out.
