AR15 optics advice: Elcan or ACOG combos?

I've read KevinB's excellent rundown on optics a number of times, but have a comparison question.

For versatility, I'm thinking of either the Elcan Specter DR or the ACOG with the Docter Optic mounted on top.

Your opinions please?

Some get bad zero shift with the BAC -- and its still not a true reddot -- plus some like the greater heads up profile with the DR.

While I am not a great Spectre DR fan -- I think for the avg shooter / 3 gun user it is a great concept. I dont think its ruggedized yet for a mil scope.

I just sold 2 pistols to buy an Elcan SpecterDr. I'll mount a Docter red dot sight on top when i have the money. If you can find the SU-230 (SpecterDr with the ACOG reticle) it'd be a great choice. It has been selected by US SOCOM and is being used with great success over seas. It's expensive and not for everyone. Heavy but built for combat. Our Forces have been using the Elcan C79A2 for years. Elcan's customer service is great (from what I've heard) and they're a Canadian company so you don't have to ship it to the USA if you have any warranty issues. Only a 3 year warranty though. Elcan's glass and field of view are superior in my opinion.

Wow... this is necro-awesome! Since I made this OP almost SEVEN YEARS AGO (LOL!), I've had both.

Currently running the SpectreDR.

I wonder if Jamie, KevinB or NaOH have a different take today?

Today, unless you are jumping out of helicopters, see the SIII1-7x24. True 1X so you can aim at your feet. 7x lets you engage Fig 11 at 600m. Reticle to account for the drop and hold offs.

costs are dirt cheap for the glass and function you get. Showing up on more 3 gun shooters.

Not sure why you would mount a short dot on an Elcan. If you are looking to do that it would be ACOG all the way.

I wouldn't. I was referring to a fixed 4x ACOG with the DR on top vs. the Spectre DR.

And again, this OP was seven years ago LOL.

I see the trend toward this type of optic too Jerry. Viper PST and Razor, Leupold, Bushnell, the SIII and others are popular. I've tried my ViperPST 1-4 on my AR, and can easily see why.

Back when I started this thread, I ended up with the ACOG, and found that the BDC was spot on out to 600. (I hadn't grown cheap then, and was only shooting good handloads, which probably helped.) It of course was a fixed 4X, so aiming at one's feet was somewhat awkward.
