Not sure if this is in the right section or should be in "black rifle"

About 2 months ago I decided to built my first Precision Target rifle.
In Quebec you wont shoot further then 200m in most range. I thought a Bolt action precision build was a bit overkill at that range. So I took the Anarchist route and built a AR-15
After 2 sessions at the range, nearly 200 rounds from 40-75gr
I finally shot what I was after

5 rounds at 200M Stoney point rest, sand bags in the back, with my EE built AR-15

what do you think ? not bad for a AR-15 :D

I am gonna try other configurations and see if I can do better next time
Ill keep you updated

What bullet are you using, what's your rate of twist, what barrel and lenght are you using?

I have a DPMS 24 Bull Special that I am putting together for this summer haven't had a chance to work on load yet still sourcing optics, and other accessories.

I have been looking at the 75 gr. A-max's but don't know if my 1 in 9 will spin them.

Was that at 200 meters/ yards?
This is my group from my m4gery. 14.5 bushy barrel, 1/9 twist shooting 55 gr American eagle off a sandbag at 100 meters. Had one flyer open it up. My group is on the left.

If you start hand loading..you should be able to tighten it up even more.
Have fun!

I have a 20 inch barrel with 1/9 twist that I got used on EE
Amax dosent work at 100 or 200 (3-6" groups) Maybe with different load but I dont know only tired 3 so far (15 bullets)

The group above is was done with sierra 69gr HPBT-Match ans some IMR 4895
Hornady 68gr HPBT-Match Seems to want to group I just havent find the sweet spot yet. Could also be my shooting also. Some are toutching somes dont and I seems to get flyers so could be me.

My AR trigger is also the SUPER Stiff Stocker this also dosent help.
I must say 3 bench shooters at the range with precision bolt guns were Shock when they saw that group. I am gonna load some more This week

oh and bullets from 40-55 is no good pass 100M ... at least in my gun. It's plinker bullets

Yes I know Quebec gun Stealers sells bullets about twice the price :(

1/2min or thereabouts is fantastic for many rifles especially an AR.

I have been really impressed over the last few years at what has been done to make them shoot.

Waiting for a Norc to see what type of fun I can dig up.

enjoy...

A match trigger is a needed item on something that shoots this good! A Timney 3lbs might help lots!:D Very nice shooting AR you have there!

Nice shooting. I'm getting decent results with 69gr SMK's as well. 75gr Hornady's also seem to work in mine. Like yours, the light one's just don't do it.

Gentlemen:

First off, I am very impressed what I have seen here, please keep up the good work. It looks like you have a very good handle on what you are doing.

If I may offer a few thoughts, I have taken the following from the Adams Lake Rifle Barrel web site, from their AR barrle section. I have no first hand experience with them, however they are a board sponsor and seem to really know barrels.

I have used this as a rule of thumb for twist rate vs bullet weight and found it to apply in MOST cases. Just keep in mind 1-7.7 is awfully close to 1-8 twist. :)

Just some food for thought

A true 9 twist is all that is needed to push 75gr Amax or Berger VLD.

The problem is mag length. 75gr Amax can be loaded to mag length and function but they look "too" deeply seated. Sitting on a full case of powder, set back is low if any. Seen the load work very well.

I would suspect 70gr VLD will work great too.

Stubby heavies like the 77gr Mk definitely work.

Look forward to doing some testing in the future.

That's a very decent group..... but.
Try this; 68gr Hornady HPBT, 21.1 gr of H335.
Load them till they just clear the mag lengh comfortably, no jams.
This load in an old Colt sporter II with a Shilen 1-9 barrell was good for consistant thumb tack crushing at 100 yards. usually 1/4 " groups or just over.
A guy at the range laughed when I told him I shoot thumb tacks with an AR. He said i'd never hit one.
We went back to the firing line after posting targets and he watched through a spotting scope while I hit 3 in a row. ( I never told him i'd never hit 3 before) He stopped laughing then, laff. I just said "See, it can be done"
The rifle did have a match trigger. It was one that you could just pull for a decent wt. or you "set" it by pulling it while on "safe", releasing the safety and pulling the rest. It brought the wt. down to almost nothing.

Come on Jerry, you forgot to promote Savage's mag length. You are falling behind in your advertising duties...lol. :):p
