I've always wanted to initiate this discussion....

Way back in 1989, I used to hunt groundhogs north of Newmarket with my Colt AR15A2 HBAR. Great success!! Great fun, too! But we all know what happened (Restricted :( ) since that time, the good old days.

What's stopping me from say finding, custom ordering a 20" HBar WITHOUT a gas port drilled. Front sight base intact or whatever since the gas port ain't there anymore. Now I have to use the charging handle just like any other turnbolt action / lever action/ pump action.

Will that lower reciever now become de-registered since the upper reciever is a single shot and totally incapable of semi-automatic fire ?

Bring on the discussion... Hey, I might just carry out this project for shzts and giggles....

Cheers,
Barney

Well if the lower remains restricted, then THAT settles the 'hunting' issue... Also that will settle the 30 round vs. 30/5 round magazine issue. 30/5 rounders it's gonna be, I guess.

I tried getting a single shot lower by the CFC but that didn't fly either though I believe that at least one CGN with a ferret upper has done it.

HeadDamage: Thanks for sharing your experience. I was thinking of heading in that direction if it's at all possible. Just imagine, gopher hunting with a single shot (charging handle) AR... Yeah, I could buy an AR180, but it does not have the same appeal. (The AR180 is NOT restricted , correct?)

Current production AR180B is non-restricted, a Costa Mesa, Sterling or Howa 180 is prohib.
I too have thought about the idea of using a AR flattop upper, with a barrel without any gas sytem, and a bolt carrier assembly to make a single shot rifle. However, if the assembly with firing mechanism attaches to an AR upper receiver, then it appears that the assembly is by definition an AR lower, even if there is no provision for a magazine, etc.
With the Ferret situation, the Ferret upper is obviously not an AR upper, so perhaps the single shot lower attached to it was not deemed to be an AR lower. Akin to the situation where a machinegun receiver isn't a machinegun receiver if it has never been assembled as a machinegun, and therefore can be used to make a non restricted or restricted semi auto receiver.

We need to soften the look of the AR.

Yup, he's in Edmonton. I can't recall his CGN handle. I think it is a lower with out a mag well though, unless me memory is wrong?

If we took a raw lower casting, and did not mill out the mag well, so that it was imposible to load any more than a single round, maybe????

Of course, the question is, "why bother?"
It would be a funky looking single shot, with a lot of acccessories to customize it, but still a manual loader.

If it can discharge and AR15 upper, it is an AR15. This was told to me by the RCMP chief forensics officer a few years ago.

Yep this is what the CFC tech's ruled when I tried it to. If there is a buffer tube then it is an AR15. No magwell and no provision for a buffer tube and you might slip it by.

Omg

I graduated high school in '88 and use to hunt up near Bradford with an AR-15A2 that I got from Gadget at Ontario Sporting Supplies....ah the good old days

If you really want the feel of an AR, be able to load really fast, shoot a very accurate LR varmint/BR cartridge, completely non restricted, reasonably priced, do at home project, funky colours...follow the link and watch the video.

Otherwise, you can make a 'pregnant' Savage/Stevens and enjoy alot more capacity then the 5/30 even if you could get the AR non restricted.
