Your comparison has little value. Both rifles excel in their respective fields. Without any criteria or intended usage in mind, any comments would be based on speculation.

oh ok quality, ease of use, cleaning, accuracy, etc. just trying to decide what the boy and i should get.

again to TDC's point.

both clean easy, both are accurate, both go boom when trigger pulled. What are you planning on using them for? If your going for long range the m1a is going to win after 300m, if your going for budget shooting the ar will be cheaper to shoot on a per round basis. both are accurate in the 300m range. blah.... if you want comparisons search for them in the black rifles forum there are TONNES of answers to questions like these.

I would suggest the AR for you and your son, primarily because it's our service rifle and I'm kind of big on the idea of that kind of knowledge being shared between fathers and sons. It is also cheaper to shoot, and I would guess more accurate under ideal conditions (range use).

If its for you and your son why don't you look at building a norc m14s? You could likely build a better rifle for less and have all the fun of doing it.

The LMT MRP CQB is the superior gun.. only because the Socom II is known for quality control problems and reliability issues... with a longer barrel like the Scout or National Match its apples to oranges...

I like the Socom alot but havent read alot of good things about it..

Well, the AR is cheaper for now, but not by much.

TDC

Socom is cheaper...by the time you get the upper, add the bolt and carrier and get the lower and some mags... plus you need sites as the MRP comes with none... MRP ends up being more cash

Both are great rifle. They are both pretty easy to clean and maintain and disassemble. Both are mag fed semi auto and easy to use with simple controls.

M1A - if you are getting an origional and not a Norinco then it will be close to $2000 and the short versions restricted.
It's more expensive to shoot, factory or reloading
IT's heavy, well compared to an AR-15 anyways.
If it matters there is more recoil etc
Non adjustable stock length (for your boy if it matters)
Non-restricted version is legal to hunt with anywhere
You can buy a Norico version for $400 give or take and tweak it yourself easily

AR-15
Lots of good models and makes from $1000 to $3000
Lighter and less recoil
Adjustable stock and barrel lenghts
Cheaper to shoot
Can't hunt with it period
Some versions might not be able to keep long range performance with a Springfield M1A National match

Just my two cents

Sosa

PS I own three of each:D

Owned both...now I have 2 AR's with a 3rd on the way, sold the Socom M14. It wasnt a bad rifle just the lack of a pistol grip (without buying a 700 dollar stock) and ammo price made me sell it.

Oh by the way the boy is me, boyfriend. lol We just dont know what to get. My bro got the LMT CQB MRP, and the thing has not fired right yet.

I gotta call BS on that one..Ive got one to and it hasnt had a FTF in several thousand rounds. Whats wrong with your MRP?

Buy both, and shoot lots.

Only reliability issue is stocking and keeping enough ammunition for either. ;)

Ok, ok... its not an MRP. Can't say 'bout that as I don't own one yet. If it's as "craptastic" as internet rumors said the Socom is, I'll buy 2! :dancingbanana:

I would agree with the others.

They are both good rifles, so really it boils down to your opinion.

What are you using it for? How often are you going to use it. How much are you wanting to spend on it?

The only hard decision is, what one do you buy first.

i think it's coming down to having to buy both, lol.
i have a .22 already and when i tried the MRP, well, it was like falling in love all over again.
To get a bit more feedback, let me answer a few questions that you've asked me. I want to get better at accuracy shooting at the range, i mean what else would you use it for if you own it? :D i don't hunt or anything like that. I'm not too concerned about weight either. We go roughly three times a month to the range, whenever we get time. As for how much i'm willing to spend, i think whatever it'll cost.
hope that helps!

I'd always go with something unrestricted if I can. Either way the socom is a bit short to really take advantage of .308 so if its the range your worried about then I'd pass that one by. A 18.5 shorty m14 would be way better and you could use it anywhere you want.

Having had an AR platform (I just sold it to fund some M14 ####e LOL) I have to say having both would be great if one could afford it...

The biggest reason nI moved to the M14 was the restrictive nature of the AR. It can only be fired on a restricted range, and that limits what kind of practice and training you can do with it. (unless you ship down the the states)

It also serves a game gun for me, and don't get us started on reloading 7.62/.308. The possibilities are endless!
