This test is done at 90 yards using 150 grain FMJ ammo. Privy is good ammo was likely going 2700 fps out of the barrel of my m14 clone. Ar400 is cheaper and easy to get up here in Atlantic Canada.

A slight mark felt on the steel and it did not deform the back of the steel. I think this would make a great gong at 150+ yards. how do you think AR500 3/8 would do at 100 yards

This is my 3/8" AR500 piece after being pelted with shot's from 30-30win (170gr @ 2200fps) and 30-06 (200, 180, 178 and 150gr @ between 2500-3000fps) at 100 yards. There is a slight mark felt from the paint chipping off. Other than that the steel is virtually unscathed. Even hit's on the edge do not damage the steel.

The thinner steel fatigues faster and will crack ! Trust me I have been through all this ! I started buying my steel from zombie supply canada and thier stuff is super tough and has lasted me four seasons of shooting !

I've put well over 1000 rounds of various calibres into my Caldwell Magnum Rifle Gong that I got at Cabelas. Shot it at 50m with my Mosin, SKS, .308, 3006, etc and the dimples aren't even noticeable when I repaint it at the end of the day. Very impressed with it.

I have some ar400 gongs that i made. Any normal hunting bullet will not leave much of a mark if any, but fmj sks ammo will crater it at 100 yds. In my mind, if your shooting most typical target bullets AR400 is all you need. Mine are 3/8"

The issue is not welding (welds just like mild steel), the issue is welding it in such a way to prevent it from cracking. Pre-heat, weld, post-heat, cool slowly. If you really wanted to get technical, stress relieving will further realign the molecular grain structure and pretty much eliminate the carbon crystallization caused by the intense heat of welding. Stress relief is pretty pricey though, unless you know a shop well enough that will put your stuff in the oven with another batch (from a customer paying full pop;)).

After trying out a few targets and some hindsight I think this is a great 300 meter target. AR400's main advantage is price, availability and its easier to cut.
