Are all Mossberg 500 forends a bit "rattly"?

Yes...they all rattle. Perfectly fine as is.

Normal. I've been told it's due to the way the Action Slide Tube fits. I've also been told it's part of why they operate as well as they do!

All pumps that I have handled are loose to some degree .as you have a tube that slides over a tube .with only the action bars connecting it to the rest of the gun .you will not notice it when you put the gun in to action . enjoy

Mossys are great shotguns! My 500 is 25 yrs old and has rattled from day 1. Never a problem except when I short stroke it! Give it a full rack everytime and it will fire everytime!

Its because the action bars on the 870 is fixed, solid. Where the ones on the 500/590 pivot. Giving you the wiggle.

I twisted a few action bars on a 870 prolly because that reason.

If you don't rack it all the way by mistake, do you see your ammo fall out? The guy at the store was saying it might happen as it doesn't have a full plate cover. Thanks.

The ability to bend and flex help keep it intact under any extra stress, impact or twisting. Fixed or stationary ones tend to have a quicker breaking point under similar conditions.

All my Mossberg pumps(500/590/590A1) "rattled"…..they are dependable SG's.

Never had my ammo fall out - not sure what that's about.

Me neither. Short stroking for me usually ends with a FTF. Then when I pull the pump back again, a second round ends up on the ramp so now I have a double feed. I just tip the gun to the right and shake both rounds out then pump the next one in, forcefully!!
