Ok, time for my stupid question of the day......

Are all Rem 700 actions the same quality? I'm looking at building a 300 WM or WSM with a heavy barrel. I've had little luck finding a Sendaro with a factory HB so I'm considering buying an SPS SS and getting an aftermarket HB on it.

My question is......is the quality of a $700 SS action the same quality as that of a $1200 SS Sendero? Is all the additional cost in the barrel, stock, etc?

Thanks

the actions are varitably the same. The differences in price are mainly in the stock for your example. The sendero, 5R, LTR, P, etc have HS precision stocks which are more valuable than the standard plastic ones seen in the SPS series.

Quality - no. Tolerances - yes.

The black SPS actions have the bolts coated in a crappy finish, whereas the Sendero has a nice jewelled bolt.

They are all made from the same metal to the same tolerances at the same time, but some are destined to look prettier than others.

They all have the potential to be a superbly accurate rifle... I have seen new actions and old actions that were quite accurately made from the factory and I have seen new actions and old actions that were quite inaccurately made from the factory... they pretty well all need to be trued to get the absolute most out of them and that does not cost much.

So tell me if I'm crazy because here's what I'm thinking of doing:

Presently have 5R in 308.
Buy a standard SS 300 WSM (want it to be pretty...).

Ditch the small barrel and cheap stock on 300 WSM. Get an aftermarket 300 WSM heavy barrel with muzzle brake. Install HS stock from 5R on 300 WSM. Now have a nice 300 WSM heavy barrel with HS stock. Get action trued, trigger job, etc.

On 5R get an aftermarket 6.5 barrel (6.5x47, 260 Rem, ???) and A5/Robinson stock. Get a smith to true it and set it up so I can swap barrels. Trigger job, etc.

I will then have 3 nice rifles for the cost of 2 barrels, 1 stock and some smith work.

Am I nuts? Other option is buy a Sendero in 300 WM and find a new 6.5???

Or simply buy a magnum bolt from Pacific tool and gauge that will convert your 5R to a 300WSM (or whatever short magnum you want) , and add barrels as you see fit. Swapping barrels is safe, easy and economical. It will mean you use one platform and only have to buy one scope.

And it is best to get it with the original 700 style extractor...

I like you suggestion of a bolt swap and using the same stock etc. but I do have a question. Will a 300wsm feed from a 308 action, or would the OP be better off going to some different bottom metal that takes detachable magazines? (ATRS, HS, V-Bull etc..) That way the feed rails are on the clip and you just swap clips for the case change.

I think ur nuts for getting rid of the 5R barrel. That's what makes that gun.

Not going to get rid of the 5R barrel...plan to get a smith to set it up so I can swap between 6.5x??? and the original 5R 308....that way I can have 2 different calibers with the same action/A5 stock / NF scope....

I see ur idea. instead of having just one action I recommend you keep the 5R with its action and get a new action for your 6.5
Your accuracy would stay confidant with both cals and it would be much quicker to just switch the scope and stock over. Replacing the barrel is like rebuilding the gun every time. little more involved than I think you want. Ive only removed one barrel and it was crazy tight. ? good luck man.

A barrel vise is about $80 with inserts on Ebay (I bought one and it is a well made and you can get more inserts from Brownells) and an action wrench for remingtons (surgeon style) is something like $60 from Brownells. You may not even need to take the action out of the stock to do the swap if your barrel is free floated right to or close to the recoil lug. Once the barrels are set by the smith you can simply screw them on and off, even easier than a savage once the barrels are setup.

The wsm is too fat, the bottom of the action will require milling for it, and then it won't work with the 308 case unless you have a detachable mag.
