Hi, I found out about a rifle today that has a Tasco "silver antler" scope. I have read that some of the older tasco's are not as bad as the newer ones.
From talking to the guy I think its and older scope but he couldn't date it.

Is this scope gonna be pure junk or will it get me by. Its a really good deal on the rifle and I almost cannot pass it up, even if just to turn it over on something else.

My old man has been shooting the same Tasco for 20 years. 12 moose and 4 deer isn't a bad success rate considering evverything he shoots at falls over. Don't treat your scope like garbage, and it won't be garbage.

Tasca scopes

The new ones made in China are junk. I have one over 10 years old made in Japan , and i never have any problem with it.

As mentioned, look for "Made in japan" on the scope. The newer stuff is all Chinese/Taiwanese I believe, and the quality is very poor. The Super Sniper used to be marketed by Tasco, and is now sold under it's own name. They were/are actually made by Hakko (as were a lot of Tascos, back in the day). I don't think Tasco ever did it's own manufacture. You can also buy direct from Hakko, or so thier sales rep tells me. - dan

If you figure it's a good deal for the rifle, don't worry about the scope, throw it away.

+1. Consider it as if the scope weren't there. If the rifle is worth the cash, then buy it. Use the scope (sorry, it is garbage) to throw on a .22 or, better yet, to put on the next gun you want to sell.

Yea thats what I'm thinking of right now. I'll probly see how this shoots for now, so I can say how it works. Then maybe use it for trading material on something else. ;)

Thanks for the help. And I'll look for made in Japan.

I have two Japanese made Tasco scopes that are about 15 yrs old that are both quite good scopes. They both in the $200 range at a time when $200 was a lot more money than it is now, so they weren't cheap. I would say they would compare to the Bushnell 3200 series in price point now.

What has been previously stated about not considering any value for the old Tasco scope is fairly accurate. When we are buying/trading/consigning older guns with lesser quality scopes mounted on them, we rarely allow anything for the optics. We usually remove the optics (unless it appears as new in great condition) and sell the rifle without the scope. We often send the old scopes and mounts to auction and they go for whatever anyone wants to bid. This of course does not apply to quality glass like Leupold, Zeiss. Swarovski.... Phil.
