Hey guys~I'm closing in on the idea of getting one of these shotguns, but was reading the specs on the Versa Max "sportsman" and something in the description didn't sound like a positive;

"This is a workhorse shotgun designed for today’s American sportsman who wants the ultimate in autoloading technology and performance but doesn’t require a full featured gun like the ground breaking original."

The comparable model is called a Versa Max "synthetic", around $400 more...but what exactly is missing on the Sportsman that the other model has? (other than ugly grip inserts) My only experience shooting a VM was a tactical, and it's that level of soft-shooting/low-recoil I'm after. How big a compromise is the Sportsman, and is it likely to be as soft-shooting/reliable as the Tactical?

Very new to modern semis, mostly set on the VM...so be nice. :)

All I can tell you is the ground breaking original sucked and had a pile of problems which some say are now designed out of them but I don't know since that one was enough for me and I normally like remington shotguns
Cheers

I’m not 100% sure of all the differences between the two versions other than the standard comes with 5 chokes, shims, and a somewhat cheap hard case and the sportsman doesn’t. But when Cabelas had the standard synthetic on sale for the same price the sportsman was going for I had to buy it. The internet had me so scared to try one out that I was looking for the waterfowl pro version because it’s rumoured to be worked over and “upgraded”.

I’m only just under 1k rounds with mine so early days yet but so far I haven’t experienced any of the Internet versamax problems. It’s cycled everything for me and with my shoulder I could barely hunt waterfowl anymore because of recoil. The other shotgun I was going between was the A400 Extreme which a buddy shoots. It’s equally soft, and reliable. He hasn’t shot his with as light a target loads as I have in my versamax but it may cycle them too. The one thing I definitely like more about the versamax is how ridiculously simple the gas system is, it’s stupid simple.

Just my 2c

I had the first generation. Soft shooter, handled all loads even the light stuff, extremely easy to clean,recoil system. The biggest con , the front grip( forearm) was never tight, it rattled and felt weird not solid, drove me nuts. Supposedly the next generation fixed this

I got one ,before the sportsman model came out. It has been a great gun. it eats any shells you feed it , and is very soft on the shoulder. It has been my go to for waterfowl for seven years with out regret. I bought this gun under recommendation of a friend who also has had good luck with one. The only issue with the gun is the camo seemed to start wearing off little fast. I hunt a lot of fields so I am sure the sand helped that out. All in All great gun.

Thanks guys, much appreciated. Positive comments~All in line with my own (limited) Versa Max experience. The negative stuff I've read is what prompted me to start this thread, as it just wasn't consistent with I've experienced, nor anyone I know who has owned one. Thanks for chiming in!

Owned a couple of the sportsmans. Both were very reliable and the softest shooting gun I've ever had the pleasure of owning. Only time I've not been afraid of 3.5" shells. But pretty they aren't. Plastics feel cheap and a bit on the bulky side. Good gun to drag to the swamp however cause I was never afraid to get it dirty.
