are the can-type bleats good for anything

I've had some experiences with the can-style doe estrus bleats that make me wonder if they do anything.

A couple of times, I have seen a buck walking (not running) at some distance. Farther away than I am comfortable shooting.

Each time I have used one of the can bleats in hopes of at least stopping him. But they don't seem to even slow down. They don't run away either mind you, the bleat just seems to be irrelevant.

Both of these experiences were in the third week of november, and were bucks that appeared to me to be 'on the prowl'

I have had results with grunts, rattling, snort wheezes and bleats but not a single response to a can. Never. I've watched bucks big and small completely ignore it during all periods of the rut. I stopped carrying it.

I have had a doe respond vocally to a can call, and duplicate it exactly before coming right out to me within ten feet. I have also had a big buck I could see but out of range ignore it totally. However, when, after using the can call I used a buck call, his head shot up like a rocket, and he walked right up to me. (inside the fence row where I could not get a shot with the Xbow)

Using a can call followed by a buck call this year resulted in a nice eight pointer.

I think the bucks hear does call quite regularly, and it just makes them feel more comfortable, they don't necessarily come right over. But use a can call and then a buck call makes them think another buck may be getting the action. What I've been doing is to use the can call about every 15 minutes, and the buck call less frequently, every half hour, or hour. Worked out this year.

I think you need to know when to STFU up too. If you know a deer is very close, be very carefull about using a call, it's really easy to blow it.
