are the older 500s as good as the newer ones?

i found a used mossberg 500 online it has a 28 inch barrel and wood furniture that i like. it doesn't say what year it is but it's apparently chambered for 2 3/4 shells if thats any sort of clue.
I'm wondering if the year it was made would even effect usability/ reliability or if it will take steel shot.

thanks for any opinions on it.
the site wants 350 plus tax

If it's really old, it might be single action bar rather than dual. Elsewise they're just as good. You'd just have to inspect for any damage or misuse.

Will take some reading, I think - I don't think the old school full chokes play well with steel shot - I also think there is something about the forcing cone angle that is very different within the barrel - for lead versus steel shot barrels? But not something that I have much experience at - just a head's up for you to confirm elsewhere ...

For maximum utility you want removable chokes and a 3 in chamber. To get these features in a used Mossberg or 870, you need to spend about 50$ more. So keep looking...

If it's 2 3/4" chamber and a fixed choke, likely its not rated for steel shot.

This is in general, not just 500s.

really depends on your intended use. if you never want to use it for waterfowl fixed choke is no problem. great old guns for just utility purposes
350 is likely too high though today's prices on most stuff is crazy
