Just a single annoyance that I've noticed on the New SKS (Chinese) I recently got. Why the hell did they put the sling swivel on the left side of the rifle?? Are there 90% of the shooters in Combloc countries left handed? Seems to me to be counter-intuitive to the stat of 1/10 people shooting left handed. That sling swivel and screw digs into my cheek. I took it off. WTF? At least put in underneath the stock........... sounds like a wussy rant, but it isn't something I ever noticed until I bought one. Gonna fill in that void with something. Any suggestions? Besides my panties :jerkit:

So you don't get a bolt sticking in the back?

Edit: How are you holding/carrying the rifle that you're getting a screw into the cheek??

The Imperial German Army (WW1) did the same thing so that the bolt of the Gewehr 98 didn't stick into the backs of its soldiers while on the march (or cavalry when riding), and that was when the bolt handle stuck straight out, not turned down (like the Springfield 1903 or the Lee Enfield).

makes sense I guess, just thought it was a bit odd of a placement, considering it is right in the middle of my cheek. (my particular sample has some rough edges on the metal, so probably dug into my cheek harder than other smoother samples, as it left a mark on my cheek). Slightly up/down/back/forward would have been better than where it currently resides.

the Lee Metford Calvary carbine has the swivel on the left side

again so the bolt does not dig into your back.

No5 Enfield / jungle carbine, same, same reason

M1 Carbine... left side again,

lots of examples

We are (people from Ex USSR) are right hand dominant. I had 2 left handed classmates during my school years. Both were "re-educated" to write with their right hand. Most Europeans are right hand dominant. Like other people said, it's the bolt hurting your back constantly thing. Answer is simple.

Exactly !!!

Same with the K98 during WWII,but the strange exception is the G43/K43 where both the sling and cocking handle are on the left.
The German soldiers must no have liked to carry that one on their backs

Russians are right hand dominant just like everyone else in the world. But, interestingly enough, the majority of their hockey players shoot left handed ...

because there is no more re-education ... lol that reeducation was done all over the modern world .. France did that in 40s and 50s ... Yugoslavia also but they had the big brother model for that lol ...

Re-education of lefties was done in the UK until at least the mid-seventies - this went for cutlery too - lefties who tried to eat their school "lunch" (barely edible crap) were re-educated in my school by making them stand on their chairs until the food was cold and everyone else went outside, they were then made to sit and eat the (now even worse) crap cold right handed. Thinking back, that was just abusive - the "meals" not the chair thing.

The comblock rifles usually sling alot more comfortably with the muzzle pointed upwards, the gun verticle with your body and behind your right shoulder. Nutcracker style. Have the sling adjusted so it is shorter with minimal relief - not too much slack or it won't work so well.

Well, back in the day one would have a rifle on their shoulder or in their hand. I have no idea why but people didn't use low ready despite the fact that AK with issue sling is perfect for that if you are over 5'10". An AK or even an RPK (depending on person's height) does low ready with issue sling just fine if that sling is extended depending on your height but try to find a pic of soldiers doing it during those times. Works best for people who are 6 feet and up. Sling goes under arm pit/over shoulder. At 6 feet butt of full stock 74 will rest comfortably on your chest about 3-4 inches below your face while flash-hider will be at around knee level.

I'm odd like that. Right hand dominant, but I use a hockey stick left handed, golf right handed, I snowboard goofy (left foot forward), and shoot right handed.

As for the sling... Most slings are on the left side. What's the problem?

It wasnt illegal, and had nothing to do with communism. All of Europe with the Prussian style public education system brainwashed the lefties to operate right handed until relatively recently.

Reminds me of the story I was once told about the genitals of Chinese girls. Unfortunately, I've never had the opportunity to check it out. :)

Grizz

This.

It kind of makes sense when it comes to firearms, especially bolt action rifles. One of guys in my WW2 reenactment group is left handed. He taught himself to carry rifle in "proper" hand and do the drill with right hand but he still shoots with left. Every shot is a job and a half. Move rifle to right shoulder, reach over with left hand to cycle the bolt, than move rifle back to left shoulder. Imagine doing that while read bullets flying around.
