Hi having recently, well august actually was when I moved to calgary was wondering what the locals hunt and when, where etc, have held off hunting this year and it is killing me!Do I have to enter draws,I am status from BC or follow the season dates?Anyone want to trade a hunt for a salmon/sturgeon trip?hope this doesnt P.O. too many many nuts but I gotta know!

Far as I know Mike, you can hunt anything you want, where ever you want, any time of year you want. No license required. :D

As long as you do it respectfully, you've got my respect. Good luck.:)

I have a friend who is status from a different part of Ontario, and when he moved here he talked to the band in this area, and got permission from them to hunt their traditional lands--------just like in the old days! :)

Not quite true. You still require permission to access private land. You also can't hunt in some parks and game preserves.

Crown land or private land to which you have been granted access. Area's that have been designated as preserve or refuge are NO HUNTING to nobody no how.

Cheers, and welcome.

:welcome: to Alberta.

If a Native Canadian person wants to be treated equal and integrated with Canadian society they can always buy a licence and enter in the draw system.

If they want to be treated differently than other hunters then they should not be surprized when other hunters treat them differently.

how would you know if I was carrying a tag?I believe in conservation first sustenance second and also that those hunters would treat me differently in any case

If you hunted only during an open season, during legal sport hunting hours, and only for species open in that WMU,and followed the sport hunting regulations, most people would treat you like any other hunter. If however, you hunted at other times,or for species that there is no season for in that zone, people will certainly treat you differently.

I do hunt in season, during legal shooting light,im not a trophy hunter, and as I said believe in conservation.I would however take a meat buck at this time as I have harvested 0 this year,I only shoot what I eat, knew this was gonna get a rise n way off topic, mods please delete!

You are wondering what the locals do?----buy a licence and get a copy of the hunting regs!

Actually what you are proposing is illegal. From my understanding, a white guy can't accompany a First Nations hunter on a traditional hunt and also, for another hunter to accept a trip in trade would constitute him being paid which is also illegal in Alberta. Now, if you bought a licence, I can't see anything wrong with a white guy taking you hunting.......

Very well said!

One of my hunting partners is a card member, but he is also a smart guy. He hunts like the rest of us.

In the post of shortmagmike's that you quote, he said he is a status First Nations person from BC, who just moved to Alberta. No white guy going with the natives. He could legally accompany them anyhow even if he was white, on a traditional hunt, so long as he wasn't shooting anything.

I know here in BC, which I believe is similar elsewhere, you simply need to go to the local band office for the traditional territory you wish to hunt in and ask for permission to hunt within their territory. They give you a letter, you go out, shoot your game and call it good.

It's good to see that you believe in using ethical practices. A status card doesn't absolve anyone from using fair and ethical practices to harvest their animals. Unfortunately, some believe it makes anything fair game by any means.

My point was if he was asking for white guys to take him hunting. If it was another status Indian then no problem....I fully understood he was First Nations. You may want to brush up on Alberta law as there is a provision about us white guys accompanying First Nations hunters on traditional hunts.......

Sorry mike, not trying to derail things here but there are some specific regulations regarding accompanying First Nation hunters and for offering compensation for someone taking you hunting. Just trying to keep you and others from having a brush with the law!

was actually hoping to hook up with a local native,if you read the thread title it is there, and it is perfectly legal for me to make a hunt trip fishing trip trade. With a native.sorry if you misunderstood,am not seeking a non native hunting partner for a trip trade as this trip also requires a status card!its fairly obvious what the demographics of this site are was hoping for the 1% to respond not to invoke the obviously anti natives could debate many points with you,but honestly,if I had to explain you would not understand, again please mods delete this thread,no good can come of it!

Why they would make such retarded provisions is beyond me. If you aren't shooting, it you're not doing anything wrong.

Oh well, here in BC while common sense prevails on this issue, they instead focus their efforts on making other laws that do not make sense to atone for their failure on this front.

My guess is to stop the potential abuse that could result......
