My wife and I went to the cabin last weekend to set up a cell phone booster and cut some firewood. On Saturday evening the dog (2 year old Pudelpointer) started acting up. She kept her tail between her legs and would not venture off the cabin porch. She'd spend her time moaning and growling on the bed. Initially, I thought she was sick.
The following morning I went for a rip around the lake. I found three sets of fresh "wolf" tracks crossing the lake ("wolf": coyote, red wolf, eastern red wolf, Algonquin wolf, coy-dog, mongrel, feral dog...I digress).
They gave wide berth to the cabin, then split up. A single "wolf" headed into my cedar swamp area and flushed out a whitetail onto the lake where the other two were waiting in the cat tails. All three then chased the deer halfway along the south edge of the lake before the deer turned to the hills and onto the neighbor's property. I don't know if the deer made it.
I have seen these "wolves" on camera in the fall and hear them all the time. The entire lake valley seems to be their territory. They are always trailed by a red fox about an hour or two behind.
I really don't like sharing deer with these "wolves".
I'd like to have a local trapper remove them. I've made a few calls but no one has called back yet. Conversely, I'd entertain having someone from the Ottawa area join me on a wolf hunt(s).
Thanks in advance to all who offer assistance or advice,
Cheers,
R
