Hello

I wanted to ask the membership here as I am a complete newbe to shotguns and was looking for something for a older family members to have for home protection, I know the home protection replies, seen them here.

I have tried a 12 guage and it has a kick even for me. So I was wondering IF there was anything on the market in a tactical configuration with a shorter barrel but smaller than 12 guage? Shorter barrel for easier movement in a home hallway if there was an emergency need.

If you know of any, please can you post a link to it?

Thanks for your time and help.

George

There are some options in 20 and even .410 gauge but the price and scarsity of defensive type ammo would be an issue if you went that route.

What were you shooting BTW?

The first time I shot a 12 gauge I found it a handfull, but by the next outing, after some simple advice from the internet, my technique was a lot better and I had no problems.

Hello

First, Thank You for your reply. I only shot on a range for a couple of tries and I have to agree, I had NO proper teacher to suggest technique.

Thought if I being a bulky guy and get moved by the 12 gauge, it for sure will do damage to my older family members IF they needed it in an emergency.

You can get 870 shotguns with 8.5" 12" , 14" and 18" barrels...you can add a recoil reducing stock and low recoil buckshot to make a significant difference. Just throwing that option out there.

Hello
Thank you Also for your reply. I NEVER thought OR knew of the variations and ammo power variations.

Any chance you know of any sellers of the above ranges? Used, as a starter, is o.k with me.

Weight is also a factor as well
Thanks again for the tips.
Will post that on the side of my computer for fast future reference.

Shotguns require a decent amount of upper body strength to use effectively.

You should have no problems once you've had some instruction, but if you also expect physically limited family members to possibly use it then a shotgun might not be the way to go?

I don't want to sound like I'm dissecting the thread starter, but if I'm reading it right...you're wanting suggestions..for a lighter-recoiling shotgun for "older family" members to use in a defensive situation? My recommendation would be to not supply/leave unattended a shotgun for un-trained, un-licensed (assuming they are both) recoil-sensitive family members to use. There are scores of legal, AND safety reasons to avoid doing anything that resembles that. I would urge you to learn/practice proper technique with a shotgun, give your older family members an opportunity to try it...and then insist they get their PALs themselves. At the very least, you'll have reached the point where they can buy/use safely their own guns for lawful purposes. Unfortunately, using a gun in Canada to defend yourself isn't one of them.

For you, and your recoil issues..lots of things play into that. The physical weight of the gun (lighter=more felt recoil) is a big factor, the action (semis are softer-shooting than pumps), the weight of the projectile(s)...but mostly your hold/stance. There are exceptions...but it's probably your technique that needs help. No getting away from the fact that shotguns=recoil, period. What gun you choose+how you use it make all the difference.

Hello Again

Thanks for ALL the replies. I`m in touch with two sellers through here. I will of course ask your opinions of both brands when I hear back from them.

George

P.S. IS there ANY brand of shotgun to "Avoid at ALL Costs!" ? You wouldn`t take it even if it were nearly free, Reason.

Thanks Again to ALL.
George

I'd be leery of newer Remingtons and most Turkish made shotguns, the former for quality issues and the latter for quality plus the difficulty of getting parts for most of them.
