if I owned a smooth bore musket loaded with shot, would I be able to legally hunt turkeys in Ontario? or would I need a black powder shotgun to be considered legal? thanks for all and any answers

yes, it will be a .69 cal 1840 usa flintlock reproduction from loyalist arms, from my calculations it should put it around 13 gauge or so . Sent a letter to the MNR here and still waiting for reply. chatted to a hunter at the turkey hunters exam and he figures it will be a toss up depending on the MNR officer. just making sure I don't or won't get charged do to a misunderstanding ....

"...need a black powder shotgun..." Yep. "Wild turkeys may be hunted using shotguns (including muzzle-loading shotguns)..." Mind you, a smooth bore musket will shoot shot. Difference is that the BP shotgun has a choke.
"...will be a .69 cal..." "Not larger than 10 gauge or smaller than 20 gauge. Shot size must be 4, 5, or 6." A 10 guage is .775 calibre. A 20 is .615 calibre.
"...Sent a letter to the MNR here..." That puts you at the tender mercies of Canada Post. Send an e-mail via the 'Contact us' page on the MNR's site. Quicker and the MNR is pretty good for responding reasonably quickly.
Or phone.

finally heard back from MNR ..you were all correct it ok to hunt with a smoothbore...but now I have it in writing from the MNR that its a ok so at least have something in my defense if some career happy officer tries to get a arrest and promotion ...
