So I just got a bayonet online and it was supposed to be for a type 99 but it doesn't fit!! The bayonet lug on the gun is thicker than will fit in the bayonet. So what did I buy? Any ideas? I thought maybe a type 38 might have a smaller lug?

What markings on the ricaso?

That will tell a lot.

Looks much like the (rare) early Pattern 1907 for the SMLE but DEFINITELY is NOT.

Early Mauser?

The Type 38 and Type 99 rifles both use the same bayonet - the Type 30. Although there were several variations of the Type 30 bayonet over the years, they all attach in the same manner and should all be capable of fitting either rifle. I recently picked up a late war Type 30 bayonet manufactured by Toyoda loom and textiles however that is very loose on my Type 99, where as my Toyo Kogyo Type 30 fits like a glove on my Toyo Kogyo rifle.

Agreed that pictures of any markings you find will help greatly - it does however look like an earlier Type 30 bayonet with the hooked quillion. Many bayonets look similar though!

So far it still looks to me like Japanese but the opening for the lug is way too small for my 99. There are essentially no markings on it except for 2 on the pummel and they aren't clear enough to see what they are really. What is it???!!!

I'm stumped now - every Type 30 bayonet I have ever seen has had either Kanji or arsenal markings somewhere on the blade or pommel. Is it possible it is a type of training bayonet?

Japanese bayonet for a training rifle, lack of markings confirms it. I have one exactly the same at the shop right now.
