Arisaka Dust Covers

For the first time ever I just compared Type 38 and Type 99 Arisakas (Kokura Series 20 and Nagoya Series 8). I had expected given 'internet data' that Type 38 and Type 99 dust covers were different. Maybe they are and either my 38 or 99 has the wrong cover, but to my surprise they are interchangeable. Is that right?

A true Type 38 Dust cover is slightly longer than a Type 99s. If you put a Type 38s on a Type 99 it will partially cover the gas vent. I believe (of the top of my head) the Type 99 cover measures 5/5-8 inches.
