I saw that super nice complete original bring back Arisaka Type 99 in the EE last night. Asking was a hard $2200. Which he says is because of US dollar and import. Which I know is fact because I import guns too.

Just wondering if Arisakas have become that coveted here?

I know that there are basically none around in perfect mid war ship home condition, but I also was unsure of the market. I have one in nice untouched shape with AA, mum, monopod, etc, and it's not for sale, I'm just curious as to the market. I wouldn't doubt it for a second that another one would get the same money, just haven't seen much in terms of offered guns or guys looking. Although about a dozen guys have tried to buy mine. Haha.

Thoughts on the market and future?

The most I would consider is a 1k for a nice all matching example, there just isn't the demand here for the Japanese milsurp. You may get a high asking price just because it is hard to find here and a collector might not want to go through with the hassle of importing but it would have to be in immaculate condition to compete with what is available south of the border.

A complete 99 with a bayonet and intact Mum could easily be 2K, so price was Ok, especially considering the costs to import.
Obviously someone thought it was Ok, it sold rather quickly.
Like they say, it's worth what someone is willing to pay.

They aren't garbage down there anymore. A nice untouched complete gun is $1000usd these days. Factor in shipping, exchange and import and you are there.
Maybe a little less for a later Arisaka.

I'm surprised and not surprised. I was surprised at how fast it went. But not really with what he got. Good news for mine I guess. Haha .

The short answer is that they will only go up and up in price. The simple fact is that if you want a nice example you have to turn to the states and for a most people that is a major turn off. I suspect that most people that have a nice type 99/96 are not going to part with it any time soon (such as yourself lol). With the new marking system that is coming in soon I would say that prices are going to increase even further! (I wish I bought my G43 when the dollar was near par!)

Three years ago I sold two mid-war nice vet ringback here on the EE and they both sold quickly. I did not have the transit chest. If I recall, Igot around $1500 ea back then. Nice matching ones with intact mum are tough to find. It's similar to the K98k game.

Hell, I sold a Type 2 paratrooper for roughly 3,000$. It was in moderate shape, but considering the rarity here it wasn't bad

i picked up a transitional type 99 locally with intact mum in really nice shape except for the name punched into the buttstock. cost me 400. the Arisaka hate is still strong.

I sold a 90+% type 38 Arisaka carbine that supposedly came from the Aleutians as a bring back. Supposedly it was picked up in one of the underground storage bunkers left behind by the Japanese. Of course, without provenance it's just a story. The fellow I got it from told me he had picked it up during WWII and had kept it as a souvenir. He emigrated to Canada in 1948 to live in the Fraser Valley because he had met a Canadian Girl and got married to her. Her father owned a Dairy farm and seeing as he only had one child told him that as long as he moved onto the farm and worked it along with him that he would give him a half interest in the farm and if he stayed around long enough that the farm would be 100% his. He liked the lifestyle and the area. He and his wife only had daughters and none of them were interested in the farm or the firearms he owned. I bought that carbine along with a half dozen other Japanese rifles from him. I had actually met him before, in Burns Lake where he told me the story of his life and about the firearms he owned. I gave him my number and asked him to call me with a price on everything he wanted to sell. He did.

I sold that rifle last fall, along with a bayonet of the same time period but not matching to the rifle. The bore on this rifle was close to perfect and the finish was as issued. No rust etc. The buyer paid a thousand for the rifle/bayo combo, no quibbling as he knew that was close to the going price.

The Chrysanthemum crest which denotes the rifle as being property of the throne was clean and intact as was the dust cover. I never did shoot it. Hopefully Tim will bring himself to do so.

As to the ground off mums, the army also did this when transferring weapons to the other services as it designated army property.

i paid 600$ for my type 99 serie 1 with the mono,AA sight, chrome bore, mum, sling, but the bolt and the dust cover are missmatch ......

i think it worth 800-900

1500 for a all match is the top (my opinion)

i paid 600 for my type 38 missmatch, ground mum ( too high but i bough it from the same person that sold me the type 99 and i offer 1200 for both)

my type 38 carbine no mum mismatch (500$)

and my Late war (1945) type 99 missmatch no mum (700$)

and i will never ever sell them !!!

next will be type 44 , and type 30, type 2 is a dream.....

Japanese stuff is addictive

Type 2 rifles which were built by Carcano for Japan to Japanese specs aren't as rare as may think. Quite a few of them came into Canada in 1968. They were dirt cheap and in VG or better condition. Some of them didn't have any finish on the wood and were new in the crate. There aren't any markings on these rifles to designate them as being Japanese. Supposedly they were bought exclusively for the Japanese Navy but were only issued in very limited quantities because they had trouble with the bolt handles breaking off.
