Hi folks, I am wondering what model/year it is, and what is it worth.
The metal seems to be in good condition, the stock has a few cracks but seems solid, the bore looks decent upon initial inspection.
It has a half box of Norma 6.5 Jap Hunting Ammo with it, so I am assuming it is chambered in 6.5 Jap?

This is a Type 38 Arisaka rifle that were originally chambered in 6.5x50mm SR Arisaka. I believe the circles on the Chrysanthemum indicate the rifle was sold or transferred out of service, though I'll wait for someone more read in these rifles to confirm or deny that.
 
At least that one still has the mum on it
Most are scrubbed off the rifles so that rifle should be worth a bit more, shame the stock is cracked
 
Yes, Type 38. Most likely 6.5 Jap unless its been messed with. Circles on the Chrysanthemum are one of the gentler way these were defaced after surrender. It's a shame about the stock, it looks sanded down as well as cracked by the tang. You're lucky Arisakas in general are quite scarce in Canada, I doubt that'd bring more than $150 in the states. Up here I don't see why it wouldn't sit in the $600 range. A bit more if your dust cover is matching! I'm by no means an expert on these though, just an opinion.
 
Kokura Arsenal Series 25 Type 38

Missing the cleaning rod. You can buy repro rods that are accurate. Do the serial numbers match?
As said before the circles mean it was surrendered or taken by an occupied country @ time of surrender, like Thailand.

I was under the impression a batch of type 38 Kokura serie 25 was given to thailand (beginning of 1940??) by Japan and were gently defaced with Japanese Circles. I have one all matching (with matching dust cover) with that light defacing. I am pretty sure it ia a serie 25 Kokura too.

i think they used them against colonial french army in the Cochinchina area

After a fast google search, it look like Japan sent some type 38 from Kokura and Nagoya 25th and 27th series to thailand in 1940 (20 000 to 25 000???). They were designed Type 83 by the thai. They have light defacing on mum probably made by Japan in 1940

Most were imported in Canada and Europe as they could not import them in the USA. The are very uncommon there.

I had a very similar rifle to the above and I think you’re correct regarding the Thai connection.

Fred, the one you have looks very similar to this one, thanks for the pictures.
I just put this rifle up for trade as I am not a milsurp collector and would rather own something more practical that I can use.
What trade value should I be looking for on this Arisaka rifle?

Wow dude everything you said about this rifle as well as Arisakas in general couldn't be further from the truth.

Hard to say i am not an expert on arisaka and bought mine about 10 years ago. The stock being being refinished is a shame, but the 2 pieces buttstock is normal on japanese rifles. We can see quite often the thai type 83 in canada as a batch has been imported in canada, but people rarely think about the thai connection and most sell as normal type 38. I dont think being a type 83 will bring more in Canada despite being a rare contract. In USA, there is some thai or japanese collectors looking for type 83 to complete a collection. Arisaka are not too common in general in Canada and they bring more and more.

Here is a picture about the type 83 defacing i found on another site (it is not mine it is from French collector Laurent Valez who studied them when imported in europe). The pattern is not too standardized, but always 8 circles. Japan had a similar defacing on mum for rifles used in training
