I'm looking to change the handguards on my 11.5" AR to some kind of rail system. The ARMS SIR and VLTOR CASV both seem to provide free-floated handguards without having to remove the barrel or otherwise alter the gun. To me, the VLTOR looks like it should be more comfortable to hold, since you only bolt on rails where you want them. Any opinions out there as to which of these is preferred, or other options ?

Thanks.

What the people here will tell you is that the ARMS is too big and too heavy, meanwhile the Vltor is a bit dated and there are better rail systems out there.

The easiest free-float one to put on without much alteration is the Troy/Samson rails. You only need to remove the barrel nut to install it. Walter from ArmsEast carries the Samson rails.

Of the two the CASV-VLTOR is the superior design.

However the Troy, SAMSON and ARMS same plane RISII SIR can be added without pulling the barrel (if Mr Dremel is yoour friend)

However pulling a barrel is child play and the rail choice should not be dictated by that...

Thanks all for the quick feedback.

Coincidental, and very timely, posting by Walter on installing the Samson rails. I think Mr. Dremel and I can manage that one, so I guess Samson it is. Now I just have to decide on 7" or 10".

How about a MONORAIL style upper? Im picking up a MI midlength free float on my 11.5"

Have recently handled the TROY and SAMSON and they are tops (quality & dollar)

Buy the 7. Send pics. ;)

For the ~$15 it'll cost you, if your rifle is running well as is, leave it ;)

Cheers.
