I'm considering getting a youth version for my lad's 10th birthday- it's light and gas operated, and Randy Wakeman seems to like them. Anyone here have one- youth or adult? What do and don't you like about it?

The only mossberg sa20 i shot needed full power hunting loads to cycle. Worked great with heavier loads. Would not eject light target loads. Sample of one for what its worth. Very light snappy gun. The fit and finish was typical mossberg

I'll sing the praises for the lowly Mossberg...lol
I had a few of the old 500's all thru the years growing up ...as did everybody.
Last summer, I also bought a Mossberg (Muddy Girl-pink camo version) SA20 for my DIL to start shooting a few sporting clays with my son and me, didn't want to break the bank open to see if she would like the sport. :dancingbanana: She LOVES IT !

Like everything else I buy used, upon inspection, this little gun was pretty filthy inside when I got it...so I peeled it apart and scrubbed everything with Ed's Red...mag tube was BLACK with carbon and so was the gas cylinder...so I soaked the gas cylinder for an hour in it...put it back together and it works like a dam !
We've had only one stovepipe since July (from this... one box of old Federal ammo) and it's shot 125 rds every week, sometimes twice a week using almost all Challenger Target and a few boxes of Remington STS / Gun Clubs ! I clean the gun after every 2nd outing...theres some carbon but nothing like when we got it !!

Our local annual Hunters Education Course put on by the HWWA had 30 students registered this year...it has a couple of shotgun shooting stations as part of the course...I RO the rifle range part of the days events, and loaned my SA20 to the RO volunteers for one of the shotgun stations for the day. It smashed down rain ALL day! Kept me busy wiping the rifles off.
When the shotgun instructor delivered my gun back to me that evening, he said that little pink gun was the ONLY gun NOT to malfunction during the course of fire that day !!
.. 30 students, between 5 and 10 shots each, using # 7 1/2 Challenger Target loads, in the pouring rain !! I believe my OCD about caring for my guns certainly helped, but still, that was a pretty good compliment to get about the SA20.

I personally don't think you'll have any issues at all with those little guns..if you do a little bit of maintenance to em every now and then.
Most guys (almost all) at our club run the heavier handicap shells (3 dram) in their semi autos...don't matter if their Benelli's, Brownings or Beretta's !!

*** FYI *** The Weatherby's come with two gas cylinders ...one for target loads and one for Heavy hunting loads.

Best of luck with your decision...what ever it is !! ..cheers....Kevin

Thank you sir. Pink isn't my colour but that won't stop me from looking at them. :D

I posted in the thread about the 612 LH. But i bought a armsan 620 youth for my daughter this past summer. She is still a little young for it just yet but has shot a youth 20 with no complaints. The 620 is running great on winchester super targets. It had the occasional failure to feed on the first box but it worked itself out in no time. I shot the 612 a fair bit and had no complaints with it. The 620 is a slim little gun. I have no regrets about getting it.

I've bought a A620 (same gun as SA20) for my kid while my buddy bought a Weatherby SA-08 for his son.

The A620 is NOT cycling any light loads while the Weatherby has no problem doing so. Also the SA-08 trigger is better and the bolt release much smoother to operate.

In short I would recommend to spend a little extra and get the Weatherby. It is simply the better gun. PR can order the compact model 20 gauge.

I have the armasan youth and it cycles light target with no problems at all. I also ordered the full length stock through Ellwoods since it is the same as the Weatherbys.

The A620 uses a different design than the SA-08. Weatherby utilizes a recoil spring in the butt stock the A620 does not. Also the slide arm assembly is very different. I'd be hard pressed to believe the Weatherby stock would fit/function on the A620. See owner's manuals exploded views section.

armsan a620 = mossberg sa-20 = weatherby sa-20

Yes your right there is a difference but I think I can make it work.

The gun arrived today- great service from Tradeex. It's looking good so far. I'm off to the skeet range tomorrow evening to make sure everything works, then it's back in the safe 'till Christmas.
