The dawn of breech loading artillery.

Armstrong RBL animation.

Interesting the UK started with the RBL then went back to the RML guns. A heads on backwards political decision?

These guns are beautiful even today. We are lucky to have quite an array of RML's, and a few RBL's, at York Redoubt on static display. This is a rarity in Canada and certainly the USA.

It must have been quite interesting to operate the shipboard version in a battle during heavy seas in Wintry weather.

Criticism: the only bogus part of his animation is the supposed detonation of the shell. To be fair nobody has witnessed the detonation of an Armstrong RBL shell in maybe 150 years.

We have smaller caliber versions of these at York Redoubt National Historic Site. All the guns have been painted with 100 years accumulation of locomotive paint. Kind of sad but this great animation shows all the workings.

Here is a website with an acceptable entry on the history of York Redoubt.

The parks Canadia entry on York Redoubt is typical whitewashed Cdn gov't blah - flum as is the wikipedia entry (globalist blah - flum).
