Army drops Smith & Wesson from pistol competition to replace the M9

For those of us who do not know how such things work...what is the "shooter in the loop" test phase?

Each pistol chosen for down stream testing would be handed off to the test group. Each model would get a separate group of servicemen and women drawn to represent the spectrum of hand size and shooting skill. Each individual service member would fire one sample gun only. They would fire that pistol under proscribed conditions (distance, target, stance, number of rounds, cleaning intervals.) The test group would compile the targets, reports including any failures, and a survey to be filled in by the individual service member.

The combined results would be used to rate each manufacturer against the competition.
